Hellgate 2, a ray of hope for the unfortunate Hellgate franchise, has now officially been canceled.
Hellgate 2 was supposed to be a sequel to Hellgate: London and Hellgate: Global. It was developed on the Unreal 3 Engine. The Korean development studio Hanbitsoft had acquired the rights to the Hellgate franchise from Flagship Studios. Now, it has been announced that the development of Hellgate 2 will be halted and the team behind it disbanded.
Initially, the game was supposed to be released in December 2013. However, that did not happen. The development has been progressing slowly, which has been attributed to the fact that the developers had too little experience with the Unreal 3 Engine, according to a report by mmoculture from the studio.
Mein MMO states: With the end of Hellgate 2, it seems that the last ray of hope for the somewhat unfortunate Hellgate franchise has now extinguished. Although there is still a “Global” version of the game and a Korean version, the game is not being further developed. The story of Hellgate is relatively convoluted, characterized by high expectations and rather disappointed hopes. The remaining European fans of the franchise seemed, to put it gently, to have not placed much trust in Hanbitsoft. This news now confirms their doubts.
