A former employee of Rockstar spoke in an interview about the reasons for a canceled DLC for GTA 5. The main reason is primarily players who spent too much money on GTA Online.
Who is the employee? Joseph Rubino worked at Rockstar as a senior cameraman for six years. In an interview on the YouTube channel SanInPlay
, he reports that he had worked on a story DLC, which ultimately was canceled. The actor who voiced Trevor in GTA 5 also previously reported about the DLC that simply disappeared.
Rubino claims that the reason for this is the players who supposedly spent too much money.
GTA Online is too successful
In what way have players spent too much? In the interview, Rubino further explains that the launch of GTA Online was already a financial success from the beginning. This led to a shift in priorities at Rockstar, focusing more on GTA Online.
Even though the online mode is fundamentally free for players, they have the opportunity to spend money, for example, in the form of in-game purchases. Rubino explains that this was the only reason why they decided against the DLC. For him, it was particularly annoying as they were already halfway done.
What happened to the content from the DLC? According to Rubino, they did not simply delete the content from the planned DLC. He believes that a lot of the stuff ended up in later versions of GTA Online
. He is sure that they did not waste the already completed items and players can now find them in the DLCs for GTA Online.
Many players are passing the time waiting for GTA 6 with GTA Online. However, a change highly requested by many players ended up behind a paywall. Some see this as a bad sign for the latest installment of the franchise: Bad sign for GTA 6? Highly requested feature for GTA Online ends up behind paywall.
