December brings cold weather, Christmas, and a few very cool events in games. Therefore, we have listed five games that are particularly relevant and recommended in December. For example, because there are new addons or special events taking place. Have fun!
December does have a clear highlight with Christmas, but often cold and darkness dominate the days of this month. Us gamers, however, can be indifferent to that because it’s always cozy in the warm living room in front of the PC or console. But what should one play in December? Where is the action happening? We have compiled five MMOs for you that are particularly relevant in December.
Star Wars: The Old Republic – Who needs Rouge One when you can have SWTOR?
Since last year, December has been the Star Wars month, as Episode VII came out around this time in 2015. This year, the highly anticipated spin-off Rouge One is in the spotlight. But even outside the cinema, lightsabers, space battles, and convoluted family relationships are the topic: Star Wars: The Old Republic is getting the new addon Knights of the Eternal Throne starting December 2nd.
Commander Darth Shepard
If you liked the previous addon Knights of the Fallen Empire, you will roar with joy this time like Chewbacca – or squeak like a Jawa who has just found a particularly nice piece of junk.
Hardly have you started the new campaign when the action kicks off, and you get embroiled in an epic battle for the planet Voss. Unlike in Fallen Empire, something is constantly happening, and you will spend far less time slicing through annoying and boring enemies. Instead, in the first missions, you already get a heavy walker with which you can blast the enemy hordes with the laser cannon or grenades.
The gameplay in Eternal Throne is therefore smoother and more exciting than in its predecessor. The story has also been polished. Fallen Empire was more the origin story of your hero, who led a hard blow to the Empire of Zakuul as the “Commander” of the Alliance at the end. In Eternal Throne, we are already a real bad-ass from the beginning, not just in title but also like the legendary Commander Shepard from Mass Effect.
Our hero is still a cool dude even when we choose the “nice” options in dialogues – whereas those who choose the “evil” reactions get the good old “Renegade Shepard” back.
Game of Star Wars
The story is the highlight of Knights of the Eternal Throne and shows that Bioware still has it. The story picks up speed right from the start, and we have hard decisions to make in each episode. For instance, towards the end of Episode One, we have to make up our minds about whether we will allow our arch-enemy from the entire Fallen Empire campaign to be healed or let them die in agony. We don’t want to spoil it here, but the decision is by no means as easy as one might assume.
Also very cool: The authors at Bioware were inspired by Game of Thrones. As Commander, we are not only the leader of a huge private army but also a contender for the Eternal Throne of the Zakuul Empire. Therefore, we also have to deal with political alliances and dive into a true swamp of intrigue and complex relationships. In doing so, we have to make some uncomfortable decisions and will be treacherously betrayed more than once.
So if you are into Star Wars, can’t wait for Rouge One, and have a penchant for strong stories, you should definitely get Knights of the Eternal Throne. But play it in English; as Cortyn rightly criticizes, the German voice acting isn’t that great.
