In Elite Dangerous, a terminally ill player wanted to visit the edge of the galaxy before his death. But a gang of trolls would not allow it and sabotaged the trip. Thanks to the help of the community, the final journey was saved after all.
The player Brandon Keith aka “Commander DoveEnigma13” is terminally ill with skin cancer and likely has not much time left. However, his last wish was to see the edge of the galaxy, the remote Colonia system, in Elite: Dangerous.
Nearly 600 other players accompanied Keith on his journey, which he could only undertake slowly due to his condition. At the destination of the trip, the developers stationed a mega-ship named “DoveEnigma”.
The ship is the symbolic goal of the journey. And this ship was recently deliberately sabotaged by trolls.
Trolls use UA-bombing against destination, but the community comes to the rescue
To sabotage the mega-ship, the trolls used the so-called “UA-bombing.” To do this, they sell massive amounts of alien artifacts at the station. These artifacts then degrade the ship’s systems and largely incapacitate it. While it is still possible to dock, many of the services cannot be used anymore.
While this would not have completely ruined the trip, it would nonetheless have dampened the experience significantly. But the community of Elite did not want to let that stand and came to the rescue. With great effort, hundreds of players transported large quantities of “Meta-Alloys” to Colonia for the DoveEnigma. This allowed them to quickly restore the systems of the mega-ship.
Developers build “troll protection” into the mega-ship
To prevent such a sneaky action from happening again, the developers at Frontier Development intervened themselves.
In a news report from the in-game news network GalNet, it was recently announced that the DoveEnigma is online again and that with the large surplus of Meta-Alloys, there will likely be no fear of alien artifacts in the future.
In plain language: The developers have likely activated a form of “invulnerability” for the mega-ship against UA-bombing. The “Enigma Expedition” is set to arrive at the DoveEnigma in the Colonia system as planned on February 4.
Donation page against skin cancer started
In addition to the in-game action surrounding Brandon Keith, a real-life fundraising campaign against skin cancer was launched together with the YouTube channel “CMDR Plater.” Through the page of the “Enigma Expedition”, you can donate money for the “St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.”
Trolls are not the only danger in the game. The aliens in Elite Dangerous specifically attack space stations.
