With Odyssey, the PC version of the space game Elite Dangerous has received a new expansion. With it, you can engage in heated shooter battles on planetary surfaces. We’ll take a look at how the addon is received by players.
What does Odyssey offer? One could say that Odyssey turns Elite Dangerous into almost a new game. It is possible to land on planets, exit your ship, and explore the landscape on foot. Additionally, there are missions that you must complete on the planets.
These missions lead you to bases where you need to steal certain goods. Of course, you will encounter guardians along the way. This creates fast-paced and action-packed shooter battles.
So Elite Dangerous gets something with Odyssey that the highly anticipated Star Citizen is also focusing on: The ability to combine space flights and planetary exploration – of course with space battles and shooter engagements.
This is what it looks like:
Elite Dangerous goes First-Person Shooter
Since when has the addon been available? Odyssey has been available to players since May 19. It is a paid expansion that you can acquire for 34.99 euros. Initially, it’s only for PC. The version for Xbox One and PS4 is expected in the fall.
What is the problem with Odyssey? The addon is currently dividing the community. So many new features have been added that the Odyssey version is incompatible with the previous Horizons version – unless owners of Odyssey switch to a Horizons mode and forgo the new features.
However, this division of the community is not expected to last. The developers have already indicated that they want to reunite all players with the release of the console version of the new addon.
How is the expansion received? Odyssey is currently struggling with some launch issues. Right at launch, players initially could not access the servers. However, when they finally could, there were reports of severe lags. There are also said to be ongoing issues with the Horizons mode. Currently, maintenance work on the servers seems to be happening continuously to address these problems.
Those who have managed to play report an impressive experience. Landings on the planets, exploration, and the shooter engagements feel very good. All that’s needed are optimizations to ensure everything runs smoothly. Here are some voices from the community:
- OLD JOJO is thrilled (via Steam): “An excellent competitor for Star Citizen. Just needs optimization.”
- CMDR_Rayven_Niunda writes (via reddit): “I’m impressed by how good the ‘On-Foot’ gameplay is, the handling, and the shooting, the use of tools. In my opinion, Elite Dangerous has always had the best ship mechanics. Although I didn’t expect the ‘On-Foot’ gameplay to be perfect, it exceeds my expectations.”
- OZeT complains about performance (via Steam): “The performance is crap, I want a refund!”
- AMDDesign has a specific point of criticism (via reddit): “The UI is terrible. I’m really not picky when it comes to UIs in games, I can handle most bizarre HUDs and menus, but man. Elite Dangerous surely has one of the most convoluted and chaotic UIs I’ve ever seen.”
In summary, it can be said that Odyssey still has a few issues that the developers are working on. When it runs smoothly, the shooter elements are a lot of fun.
