In the MMORPG The Elder Scrolls Online the Early Access for the new chapter Summerset on PC started today, on May 21st. The servers went offline for maintenance. However, ESO is back online now: the update and patch notes are here.
When does maintenance start? At 10:00 AM our time, the PC servers were taken offline for maintenance. This corresponds to 4:00 AM Eastern Time in the USA.

How long does maintenance take for ESO? The exact duration of the maintenance work is not known. Community manager Gina Bruno stated that they hope everything will be back up later in the morning. This could mean for us: The Elder Scrolls Online will be back in the late afternoon. Maybe 4 PM. Maybe a bit later.
Update 3:20 PM: It seems to have gone a bit faster after all. The servers are still down for maintenance, but the update is now available and can be downloaded. It is about 10 GB in size. The patch notes for 4.0.5 Summerset can be read in full length here at ESO. They are also available in German.
What is happening today? Summerset is essentially launching on PC. The “Early Access” actually just means that PC players can play it before players on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Those will have to wait two weeks. A prerequisite is that players have purchased Summerset. Otherwise, they can only play the update that comes for free with Summerset.
Why is this happening on a holiday? Pentecost Monday is only a public holiday in our regions and some neighboring countries. In the USA, today is a regular working day, and Zenimax aligns itself with the USA.
PS4 and Xbox One players start on June 5: For players on consoles, it doesn’t start until 2 weeks later. This is customary for ESO, as patches also arrive later there.
Players are cautiously optimistic about the launch: In a thread in the official ESO forums, PC players are already discussing the headstart. They have experienced this before. It is expected that:
- It will be a mammoth patch, a gigantic download
- Add-ons will not work with the new patch for a few days while the add-on developers adjust them to the new version
- and pessimists believe that there will be problems right at the beginning – it is advised to take the day off not on the patch day, but rather the day after
