Elden Ring: Nightreign is supposed to be a game with a multiplayer focus, where players meet in a trio squad to take down bosses and loot items. Many are wondering if the game will have crossplay at launch and we provide you with an answer.
Will there be crossplay? No, there will be no crossplay at launch. What there will be, however, is cross-generation. Platforms like PS4 and PS5 and Xbox One as well as Xbox Series S/X can play together. PC players will be left on their own.
Is Elden Ring: Nightreign an exception? No, even older titles from FromSoftware do not have crossplay, including Elden Ring, Dark Souls, as well as Armored Core and Bloodborne. Although crossplay has become standard for many new multiplayer games, FromSoftware opts out of it.
Why is there no crossplay in FromSoftware games? There is no official statement from the developers regarding this. Nevertheless, we can speculate on what it could be due to:
- High costs regarding the servers that would need to be provided for the entire player base to play
- Too little development time, in which crossplay did not find a place anymore
- Restrictions and no uniform agreements among the various platforms
- It might not be worth it, as Nightreign is a spin-off and will not be funded further in the future
- Anti-cheat could pose a hurdle
Keep in mind that these are just speculations. FromSoftware is known to refrain from crossplay, so it is not surprising that Nightreign will not benefit from it either. Besides crossplay, fans are also interested in the upcoming classes, the so-called Nightfarers. You can find out more in our overview: Elden Ring Nightreign: All 8 classes in overview
