Would Jack and Rose have fit together on the infamous door in the movie Titanic to survive? A study by James Cameron provides the answer to the debate.
Many fans may have already asked themselves whether Jack (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) died in Titanic for no reason at all.
Wouldn’t he have simply fit next to Rose (Kate Winslet) on the famous door if she had just made a little room?
To definitively answer this question, James Cameron commissioned a study that scientifically tested whether both could have survived using the door.

Why did the director conduct the study? As James Cameron told Toronto Sun in December 2022, he wanted to use the study to conclusively prove that Jack could not survive, “to put an end to the whole thing once and for all and drive a stake through its heart.”
What did the study look like? A forensic analysis was conducted with a hypothermia expert, during which the door from the movie was recreated.
Two stunt performers, with similar body types to Jack and Rose in the film, then acted as the couple swimming in the cold water.

Equipped with sensors, they were then to try different methods so that ideally both characters would survive.

What was found in the experiments
What is the result of the study? “[…] The answer was that they could not have both survived. Only one could survive,” James Cameron summarized the study results to Toronto Sun.
As seen in the video from National Geographic, both individuals would have actually fit on the door. However, it would have floated so far in the icy water due to the weight that both would have died from hypothermia.
While a position was found during the experiments where Rose and Jack could sit on the door to keep their upper bodies out of the water and thus survive, the director considered it unlikely that the two characters would have made it that far.
While several attempts in a controlled experimental setting were conducted here, there would have been many more variables in a real environment that would have made it much harder for both to survive.
Furthermore, Jack, according to the director, would most likely have acted in the catastrophic situation in a way that ensured Rose’s survival and would have honorably sacrificed himself instead of endlessly trying to figure out how he could be saved.
With a laugh, he then commented that now, based on the things he learned in the study, he would have made the door a little smaller to eliminate any doubt that Jack could not survive.
Humorously, the director concluded to Toronto Sun: “Maybe…maybe…I won’t have to deal with it anymore after 25 years.”
