A YouTuber reportedly heard that Electronic Arts is planning a new game in the “Titanfall” franchise, but Apex Legends is said to be a battle royale game like Fortnite. Other sources are now also confirming this information.
Where does the rumor come from? The YouTuber Jeremy Hambly runs the channel “The Quartering.” He claims to have heard this rumor from a “reliable source.” It is said to come from an insider.
This is said to be the presentation plan: Allegedly, EA wants to release a kind of “teaser announcement” today, on Saturday, February 2, that hints at the new game, but it is not a proper reveal.
Famous streamers from the “Battle Royale” community like Shroud and DrDisrespect are said to have already played a closed beta and be part of this teaser announcement.
On February 4, next Monday, the game is supposed to be officially presented and released on the same day.
New Game “Apex Legends” by EA
Here are the additional details about the game:
- The game is supposed to be called “Apex Legends” and is an official part of the “Titanfall” franchise, but it is said to have a different “feel” than previous Titanfall games.
- It is being developed by Respawn.
- It is a free-to-play title.
- The gameplay is said to be a mix of Blackout from Call of Duty 4 and Rainbow Six Siege – with a battle royale format.
- Teams consist of 3 players.
- The three-player teams are supposed to consist of different characters that complement each other – like in Overwatch.
- The maps provide space for up to 60 players and 20 teams.
- And Apex Legends is supposed to be financed through a cash shop and microtransactions.
Why does this sound credible? We reported in December that EA was recruiting people for a new Titanfall. It seems clear that something from the studio regarding Titanfall is coming soon.
Furthermore, the YouTuber plausibly explains that he tried to reach Respawn, and they could have easily dispelled the rumor if it had been nonsensical. The YouTuber claims to have seen footage and appears very convinced of this rumor.
It also seems logical that EA wants to hop on the F2P battle royale train. With Battlefield 5, it seems they missed out. If EA really has something in the works, they should hurry before the battle royale hype dies down.
What speaks against the rumor? February is already surprisingly full with titles like Anthem and Far Cry New Dawn. And such a sudden launch for a new game seems very early. People were actually expecting a Titanfall much later.
This is what happens next: The good thing about the rumor is that we should find out in just a few hours if there is any truth to it. Today, one should keep an eye out for whether EA makes such an announcement.
Titanfall game allegedly without Titans
Update 20:26: There seems to be something to the rumor. Both Jason Schreier from Kotaku and eSports journalist Rod Breslau (via Twitter) are now reporting about Apex Legends.
- Schreier says he had the information last month.
- Breslau refers to sources who have already played the game at an event. This could include streamers like Shroud and Dr Disrespect, whom the YouTube source also mentioned.
According to Breslau, Apex Legends will be a Titanfall without Titans. The game is being developed with Valve’s Source Engine.
So it really seems to have some truth to it.
