EA games are to receive new and innovative ways that change core gameplay and map design. They are following in the footsteps of PUBG and Fortnite.
The success of battle royale shooters like PUBG and Fortnite has not gone unnoticed by EA. These games offer an FPS experience that other shooters do not, which is highly sought after by the player base.
This bold change in the core elements of gameplay motivates the EA team to develop new player experiences.
Not just PUBG clones, something new is needed
During an investor conference, EA’s CEO Andrew Wilson praised the battle royale shooter PUBG. These new player experiences from PUBG and also Fortnite are clearly something the FPS community wants.
While EA does not rule out a PUBG-like mode for Battlefield, the greater focus is on “new and innovative ways to play” – and this applies to all their games. Wilson states that there are many factors that keep players tied to a title. One of those is the development of core gameplay. The PUBG team changed the way players play FPS games – and that is respected at EA. That has also continued with Fortnite.
“It is clearly a game mode that interests the global FPS community. Since we own some of the best shooters on the market, we are expected to think about new and innovative ways to play. But that does not mean simply building PUBG clones within the Battlefield universe. Much more, it means our Battlefield teams look at how to incorporate innovations into every aspect of the game. This includes core gameplay and map design,” says Andrew Wilson.
In PUBG and other battle royale games, it is about being the last player standing. Initially, you fly in with many other players to a map, seeking equipment and weapons. If you are the last one alive, you have won.
This gameplay principle fascinates millions of players. PUBG sold more than 30 million copies, 4 million of them alone on Xbox. For Fortnite: Battle Royale, over 40 million players have already registered.
