Electronic Arts is working on a new title in the Star Wars universe. This is at least evident from the job postings.
Even though there have been repeated calls in the past, that Disney should revoke EA’s license for Star Wars – they still hold the rights. And apparently, they are still actively utilizing and planning it.
The job page from EA indicates that the studio needs a Lead Online Engineer. They are not attempting to obscure what this is about, as the goal is to “lead a team that delivers online features for a ‘Star Wars’ project with open world“.
Otherwise, the information is rather sparse or virtually non-existent. The applicant should already have experience in implementing online features and some other skills.
How exactly the game will look is a matter of wild speculation. An “open world” title could basically be a new MMORPG, but a co-op shooter with plenty of lightsaber action is also conceivable.
Similar job postings appeared at EA back in 2013. Since nothing has been heard from it since then, players and fans assumed that the secret project was canceled. However, the renewed job postings promise the opposite.
However, if a position as important as the Lead Online Engineer is currently to be filled, then it will take a little longer for the official announcement. Perhaps this is a glimmer of hope for all who can no longer relate to SWTOR or long for an “open world” title set in the infinite galaxies of Star Wars.
Just recently, EA closed the studio Visceral Games. They were also working on a Star Wars game, which is now supposed to be continued by an EA studio in Vancouver.
What kind of game would you wish for? What do you think the perfect open world title would look like? And what should the game absolutely not contain? Or is the game already lost for you because it will have “EA” on it?
