With a seemingly harmless tweet, the famous publisher Electronic Arts (Apex Legends, Battlefield, FIFA) has made the internet its enemy. Less than 140 characters were enough to leave even its own employees speechless.
This is what EA says: While rumors about the sale of Electronic Arts (EA) are circulating, the giant publisher makes a big faux pas.
The official Twitter account of EA has posted a tweet that wanted to follow a trend. In the form of a seemingly harmless meme, an employee tweeted: “They are a 10, but only like singleplayer games.”
The “10” refers to a rating of someone’s attractiveness. On a scale from 1-10, people rate individuals. In the corresponding meme, they find the perfect partner, a 10, but have a flaw that ruins everything. In this case: singleplayer games.
EA has already caused quite a stir among singleplayer fans with the lack of a campaign in Battlefield 2042. Now the latest tweet is receiving heavy mockery, even from employees of studios that are part of EA.
Battlefield 2042 is considered an absolute disaster. The studio is supposed to be rescued with the first season:
Head of Apex Legends shakes his head over EA
This is how the internet reacts: The tweet collected tens of thousands of replies, quotes, and retweets in no time. Among them are well-known names like journalist Paul Tassi, streamers JackSepticEye and Gladd, or the well-known YouTuber VideogameDunkey.
While there were mainly cynical responses or even questionable comments such as: “How are your tweets actually worse than your games?”, Vince Zampella, the head of Respawn Entertainment (featured image), only reacted with an emote showing a person facepalming:
Respawn develops Apex Legends, the popular battle royale, which is published by EA. Apex Legends was a huge hit upon its surprising release in 2019 and is still widely played.
The developers support it with new seasons and regularly release new videos with story content:
Zampella is not the only developer at EA who is upset about the tweet:
- The writer of Dragon Age, David Gaider, says: “As usual, EA jumps on a trend, totally misses the mark, and slaps itself in the face.”
- Aaryn Flynn, who used to work at BioWare and is now working on the co-op survival game Nightingale, reminds: “You … make singleplayer games.”
- Mike Laidlaw, a former developer of Dragon Age, simply calls the tweet “Absolutely insensitive.”
Even a former employee of Visceral Studios complains (via Twitter.com). EA closed the studio and allegedly laid off around 100 employees.
This is how EA reacts: In response to the criticism, EA’s Twitter account spoke up again. In a new tweet, it states: “Mockery well deserved. We accept the defeat because singleplayer games would actually make someone an 11.”
However, the attempted rescue only works to a limited extent. Many singleplayer games have a large fan base, and even many multiplayer games and MMOs are often enjoyed solo. We even have a whole list of games that are suitable for solo play:
