Keanu Reeves’ appearance at the E3 2019 was a huge highlight for many visitors of the fair and viewers at home. In an interview, Xbox chief Phil Spencer spoke about how Reeves himself felt about the appearance and the reactions.
This is how the audience reacted: As soon as the camera panned to Reeves’ face in the gameplay trailer of Cyberpunk 2077, the fair visitors screamed out their excitement. When Reeves also stepped onto the stage accompanied by fog, fans even stood up and applauded loudly.
During his appearance, there were also heckles. When Reeves referred to the game’s atmosphere as “breathtaking,” a fan shouted, “You are breathtaking!” For that, he even received a small thank you.
But even after Reeves’ appearance, the hype around him remained. On reddit, a talented artist created fan art of the “best E3 waifus.” Meanwhile, the post has over 40,000 upvotes.
Keanu Reeves was overwhelmed
This is how Reeves felt about the appearance: According to an interview by Vanity with Xbox chief Phil Spencer, Keanu Reeves was overwhelmed by the fans’ reaction:
I think he was blown away by the reactions. And I loved how he just basked in it. When he came back, you could see his “Wow.” […] They were so nice to him, and he was really just overwhelmed, which I think is pretty cool.
During his appearance, Reeves had some difficulty completing his lines because the audience was just too excited. At times, he even had to laugh, apparently because the atmosphere just swept him away.
Shortly after he appeared on stage, Reeves struggled to speak due to the fans’ excitement. Throughout his appearance, he increasingly shared the enthusiasm himself.
Why was Keanu Reeves there? Keanu Reeves appeared at the E3 during the Microsoft press conference. He plays a leading role in the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 and was on stage as part of the game’s presentation to say a few words. Spencer said:
I didn’t know how it would go. It was actually the idea of CD Project Red, they wanted us to do it, and we have good relationships with the people. I’ve seen enough celebrity appearances on the E3 stage that didn’t necessarily go over so well. When we then saw how [Reeves] is portrayed in the game, we thought: “Okay, that’s pretty authentic.”
Spencer himself really liked the appearance, and for him, the most important thing was to provide people with a great show with good content.
Cyberpunk 2077 has apparently benefited well from the mood around Keanu Reeves:
