One of the most useful tools in Dying Light 2 is the grappling hook. Unfortunately, you get this tool quite late in the game. MeinMMO explains how you can obtain the tool and how to use it best.
What is the grappling hook? You can attach the tool to certain surfaces by throwing a hook connected to a rope. You then use this rope to swing and make long jumps.
The grappling hook has no effect on enemies; you can only target surfaces. These are marked by a display when you have equipped the grappling hook. However, you need stamina to use it and gain momentum, just like with the paraglider or the secret flying broom.
How do I get the grappling hook? During the mission “Transmission,” you unlock the hook. The mission is one of the last story missions of the game, and you will reach it likely after approximately 10 to 15 hours, depending on how much you focus on the story or other content.
At the end of the mission, you are given the grappling hook so that you can use it to climb a building. From then on, you have access to the tool and can use or upgrade it throughout the city.
Tips for the grappling hook – Fast and safely through the city
Why do I even need the grappling hook? Without the tool, you will not be able to reach certain buildings in Dying Light 2. With the grappling hook, more secrets of the game become available to you, such as some safes with special loot.
Remember to upgrade the hook with a master craftsman. Only then can you fully unleash its potential. We have some tips for you on how to use the grappling hook best.
1. Use the hook in free fall and prevent your death
When you are above the rooftops of Villedor, it can happen that you misjudge your jump from one house to another. This can often end fatally if you fall too deep or plunge into a horde of zombies.
With the grappling hook, you can prevent that. Throw it in a free fall towards the nearest surface above you to cushion your fall. You can even pull yourself directly to safety or use the swing to quickly take another route.
This does require some practice and good timing – but for emergencies, it is a good way to evade death. You can find more tips here:
2. Move faster through the city
The main area of application for the grappling hook is the swing on the attached rope. With this, you can explore previously unreachable places by swinging happily through the city.
However, an advanced method of moving is to combine it with the paraglider. If you are not making progress with the glider, you can drop a bit and swing forward at the next surface.
Thanks to the speed of the fall and the swing, you can redeploy the paraglider after letting go and continue gliding through the air.
By the way, when you use the hook while running, you also get a small speed boost. Although it’s minimal and not worth mentioning, it can save your life during a chase with good timing.
3. Defeat enemies with new moves and more tricks
The grappling hook cannot target enemies, but it can target explosive gas canisters. You can simply pull them to you and then comfortably throw them at enemies. This is especially useful if you would otherwise get detected or if you find yourself in a precarious situation. reddit user vulturevan shows in the clip how that looks:
Additionally, you can use the swing with the grappling hook to execute jump kicks. These are similarly powerful to the completely exaggerated dropkick, and you can kick entire groups of enemies off rooftops or into traps.
The grappling hook is versatile and one of the most important tools in the game. Especially if you want to see everything in Dying Light 2. Let us know how you like to use it and what tips you have!
