Dying Light 2 is not on the index in Germany, but a cut version of the game was created. However, it is not used everywhere. Anyone who buys the digital version via Steam, Epic, or the official store still gets the uncut version – even in Germany.
What happened? Dying Light 2 was released in two different versions:
- The uncut version is valid worldwide and is extremely bloody.
- The cut version is only available in Germany and China. Here, human enemies cannot be decapitated or dismembered. Neutral NPCs are even completely protected from your attacks.
The cut version basically exists only because the first part of the series ended up on the index here. Without cuts, the USK likely would not have granted approval.
However, at release, some players noticed that they indeed own the uncut version, even though they purchased it in Germany. But why is that, and where can the cut variant still be found?
Uncut only in the digital version for PC
What does the developer say? The developer Techland stated to GameStar that the sale is not due to a technical error, but rather intentional:
Yes, we have already confirmed that, and nothing has changed – the digital versions on PC are uncut because there is no official ban in Germany. The console versions are cut.
So if you buy a digital version in Germany via Steam, Epic, or Techland’s store, you get Dying Light 2 as uncut, with lots of blood and violence.
Players on PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch, however, are out of luck. They still only receive the cut version. Here, a possible alternative is to buy the game abroad. However, note that players of the cut and uncut versions cannot play together.
Anyone playing Dying Light on PC has to be careful not to start the game too often. Otherwise, it can happen that you get simply locked out for 24 hours.
Will Uncut stay Uncut? This question cannot be answered at this moment. There is always a chance that Dying Light 2 might end up on the index later or may need to be cut.
What do you think about Techland’s move? Do you think it’s good that there is now an uncut version in Germany? Or does the back-and-forth bother you even more?
