Have you always wanted to feel like a mighty angel? Then keep an eye out for Zariel’s sword. This longsword once belonged to the angel Zariel before she fell and became the warlord of the hellish layer Avernus.
Forged from celestial steel, it radiates a gentle glow and hum. The sword itself decides who can attune to it – it seeks a brave and heroic bearer. It grants an instant attunement. Your alignment automatically becomes Lawful Good, and you gain a new personality that you must roll for.
When you first attune to the sword, you transform into a celestial, idealized form of yourself: blessed with otherworldly beauty and a spark of heaven in your heart. You also gain wings that grant you the ability to fly and hover. Nothing and no one can undo this transformation.
In addition to the new appearance, you also gain suitable celestial abilities. You automatically speak Celestial and have resistance to necrotic and radiant damage. Your Charisma score is automatically set to 20, provided it is below that.
You also gain the ability “True Sight”, allowing you to see through illusions and see in magical darkness as if it were bright daylight. It also enables you to see into the Ethereal Plane. The sword is a lawful good, sentient artifact and communicates through emotions. Its bearer also gains advantage on Insight checks.
The Sword of Zariel radiates holy light, shining in a small radius and unsettling fiends – they suffer disadvantage on attack rolls in the bright light of the sword. As a bonus action, the glow can be intensified or dimmed.
The artifact can only be destroyed by Zariel herself or by her death in the nine hells, unless wielded by a powerful angel, paladin, or cleric. If Zariel dies permanently, the sword loses its divine indestructibility.
