Vecna
Vecna is among the most well-known villains in the DnD multiverse. He is an arch-lich from the world Oerth who has managed to ascend to godhood. He learned necromancy and the secrets of light from the demon lord Orcus. He has also mastered the magic of both death and life, making him one of the most challenging adversaries.
Originally, he was a mortal mage who gained immortality through dark rituals. He was betrayed by his general, the vampire Kas, who cut off his left hand and gouged out his left eye. Both became powerful artifacts feared by many.
Even contact with one of the two items is enough to alter a character’s alignment to evil or completely lose their soul. Should the latter occur, Vecna can take over the soulless body and be reborn.
Vecna is part of various DnD adventures and the main adversary in the campaign book “Vecna: Eve of Ruin.” Some may also know Vecna’s name from the series Stranger Things, in which he is also an evil figure. Vecna can also be found in the horror multiplayer Dead by Daylight as a killer.
In the film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, the adventurers also fight against dark magic and necromancy:
Tiamat
The most notorious and well-known adversary in the world of Dungeons & Dragons is the dragon Tiamat. She is regarded as the queen of evil dragons and the goddess of greed. She is also the mother of all chromatic dragons and the arch-enemy of good metallic dragons. Many brave adventurers who face her seem to go into battle with the knowledge that they may not succeed.
The five-headed dragon is incredibly powerful and known for her cruelty and greed. Unlike most chromatic dragons, she does not just have one breath type, but a different one for each head. Her ultimate goal is to return to the material plane and destroy all realms. To achieve this, she even made pacts with Asmodeus.
She is immune to many spells, making her a true terror even for more experienced adventurer groups. And even if she is defeated, her essence merely returns to her infernal prison in the Nine Hells, to break out again after some time.
Tiamat is the main antagonist in the campaign “Rise of Tiamat” and in the English campaign book “Tyranny of Dragons.”
