In a new video, Marco from Nerdkultur discusses the new sci-fi hit and why it could be one of the best sequels in film history.
Who is Marco Risch? Marco Risch has been uploading videos with news, reviews, analyses, and interviews about current movies, series, and video games on his YouTube channel Nerdkultur since 2015.
In his Podcast Nerd & Kultur he chats every Sunday with his colleague Yves Arievich about topics like Star Wars, Marvel, and DC. With both, he is part of the Webedia network, of which MeinMMO is also a part.
In a new video, Marco talks about the sequel to the sci-fi hit Dune and why you can compare it without a guilty conscience to one of the best sequels in film history:
What makes Dune 2 a successful sequel? In his video, Marco discusses that Dune 2 is only a good
sequel, which Christopher Nolan even compares to The Empire Strikes Back. Thus, according to the director, Dune 2 can measure itself against one of the best sequels of all time.
However, Marco also explains in his video how exactly this was achieved. He mainly emphasizes the consequences that director Villeneuve draws from the first part and coherently continues in the second part. For example, he managed to turn the actual ending of a first book into a whole film and thus into the middle part of a trilogy.
In his video, Marco talks about what makes Dune 2 an epic cinematic hit in his eyes. He particularly describes this part as more tangible
than its predecessor. Villeneuve focuses on an immersive cinematic experience and uses massive imagery and sound design in non-verbal moments.
Thus, there is a lot of subtlety in the quiet moments of the film. Marco describes that through Villeneuve’s technique in these moments, one can almost feel the sand beneath one’s feet.
Viewers see the hero from a new perspective
Marco reports on the perspectives chosen for Dune 2 and why you see the film at the beginning through the eyes of Paul Atreides, but in the end through Chani’s eyes.
This is how Dune 2 begins with the transformation of young Paul into a son of the desert. To vividly experience this contrast, the film first follows the plot from his perspective.
In his video, Marco describes why from the midpoint of the film, you perceive everything more from Chani’s perspective. Because from this point on, the hero of the story recognizes a significance for himself and no longer just reacts but acts. Thus, Chani takes up much more screen time in this part and is meant to become another figure of identification.
Marco discusses that the main motif of Dune now becomes clear through many aspects and why that means that a second novel was necessary and why Villeneuve is already working on the third part.
In the video, he describes the great art of Dune 2 as the fact that we cheer for a hero, even though we suspect he is evil. He believes that there must be a third part; it cannot simply end after two acts, just like it did back then with The Empire Strikes Back.
