Dune: Part Two is eagerly awaited by film fans as the big blockbuster of this year. However, according to critics’ reviews, a sci-fi movie from last year performs slightly better, despite the massive difference in budgets.
With Dune: Part Two, the sequel to the big blockbuster about the desert planet Arrakis is soon to be released. According to Variety, the film’s budget was a whopping 190 million dollars.
Consequently, the expectations for Dune 2 are also quite high. So far, however, the film has managed to convince a majority of critics.
On Rotten Tomatoes, it currently stands at 97% on the Tomatometer with a total of 156 reviews (as of February 27, 2024).
Dune 2 is already receiving excellent ratings. However, a much cheaper sci-fi film that was released at the end of 2023 is performing even better among critics on Rotten Tomatoes: Godzilla Minus One.
Godzilla Minus One as a Surprise Hit in 2023
What is Godzilla Minus One? Godzilla Minus One is set after World War II. Just as Japan is already in crisis and suffering from the consequences of the war, the gigantic monster appears and threatens the cities and their inhabitants.
The film was released on November 3, 2023, in Japan and was shown in theaters worldwide starting December 1, 2023.
As Variety stated, it was a production worth 15 million dollars. Thus, Godzilla Minus One cost a fraction of Dune 2, yet was well-received by audiences and critics alike.
The film currently receives on Rotten Tomatoes:

- 98% on the Audience Score
Critics praise Godzilla Minus One for its gripping story, which is very human and touching for a monster film. But the special effects also impress, despite the smaller budget.
This means that the sci-fi film is currently performing even slightly better than the upcoming Dune sequel, based solely on the critics’ reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

Godzilla Minus One was an absolute surprise hit last year, winning over critics despite its low budget, whereas a big title like Dune 2 is already expected to blow audiences away.
It remains to be seen how the two sci-fi films will fare in comparison once Dune: Part Two hits theaters and receives feedback from audiences.
