The Fortnite streamer Ben “DrLupo” Lupo raised nearly 1 million US dollars for charity for a children’s hospital at the Guardian Con – all in just 4 hours of playing Fortnite. This means that about a quarter of the total proceeds from the charity event are attributed to him.
This is how much DrLupo’s Fortnite stream contributed to the Guardian Con: DrLupo, whose real name is Ben Lupo, is a well-known Fortnite streamer and a family man. He is known for regularly hosting charity streams. Additionally, he is a passionate supporter of St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
After raising high amounts for the hospital during previous Guardian Cons, this year he managed to raise about a quarter of the total donations from the entire event.
In his 4-hour streaming block, where he played Fortnite, he collected almost 920,000 US dollars in donations for the hospital.
For reaching certain donation milestones, there were various stretch goals. For instance, DrLupo played with self-imposed handicaps like a building ban in Fortnite.
After reaching this massive donation amount, Lupo was visibly moved and struggled with tears.
He emotionally thanked all the participants and donors, but also received great praise and admiration from the community as well as from other streaming figures like Tfue or Jacksepticeye.
This is how the Guardian Con 2019 went: This year, it is arguably the largest Guardian Con to date. Developers such as Bungie, Gearbox Software, or Digital Extremes and numerous prominent streamer figures like DrLupo were present.
The hoped-for goal of 3 million US dollars was significantly exceeded by the community. A total of over 3.7 million dollars in donations was raised through various smaller actions and the large-scale streaming marathon.
