The first testers have looked at Dragon’s Dogma 2. There is criticism mainly regarding the weak performance of the action RPG. But how bad is it really? MeinMMO has examined the criticism and also tested the game itself.
Dragon’s Dogma has launched and is already receiving fantastic ratings from the testers. However, not everyone is completely enthusiastic. Especially the performance on consoles and PC is under criticism. MeinMMO explains where the problems are and whether you can do something about it. PS5 and Xbox Series X|S: 30 FPS and regularly below
How does it look on consoles? The first testers explain that 30 FPS are typically reached in the game. On the Xbox Series X it is a bit more stable than on the PS5 and a few more FPS can also be achieved on the Xbox. The YouTube channel “ElAnalistaDeBits” has tested the game on consoles and provides the following average values (via YouTube.com):
- Xbox Series S: WQHD (1440p), 35 FPS
- Xbox Series X: 4K, 40 FPS
- PS5: 4K, 38 FPS
As soon as you enter the two capitals, performance noticeably drops and sometimes falls significantly below the 30 FPS limit. If you are out with your team in the green landscape without many NPCs, the game can indeed reach almost 40 FPS. However, you will not achieve stable 60 FPS.
Also frustrating: Some testers, such as colleagues from IGN, report that the overall image quality on Xbox and PS5 is significantly lower than on PC. We have embedded the English video from IGN here for you, where you can also see the direct graphic comparison in moving images:
PC: In Dragon’s Dogma 2, especially the CPU is limited, 8 GB VRAM is almost too little
How well does the game run on PC? With a high-end system (RTX 4090, Ryzen 7 5800X3D), the testers from IGN achieve stable 60 FPS at 4K with DLSS (Quality) enabled. IGN also notes: If your CPU is not fast enough, your graphics card will have to wait for data. As a result, your frame rate can sometimes drop below 60 FPS because the graphics card cannot (continue to) work.
The colleagues from IGN emphasize: The current stutters and frame drops are not a GPU problem but are mainly due to the CPU. However, it is probably just a matter of time before Capcom addresses this with an update.
In the MeinMMO editorial team, we also tested the game. With an AMD Ryzen 7 5800X, 32 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti, and a resolution of 2560 x 1440, colleague Karsten explored the large city of Battahl. How does it look with weaker systems? The colleagues from PCGamer also tested the game on a Full HD system with RX 6600. Here, it quickly becomes apparent that the RX 6600 barely suffices for the game. Especially the 8 GB video memory becomes a problem in demanding scenes. The tester explains that there is at least a warning in the game before the memory overflows:
Even at 1080p and maximum graphics settings, the VRAM load was too much for the 8 GB of the Radeon RX 6600. The menu warns you that you have exceeded the limit, so it’s worth paying attention to that.
