The character editor of Dragon’s Dogma 2 is already available for free, although the actual game won’t be released until March 22. MyMMO author Christoph Waldboth believes that Capcom is doing everything right – and is only fueling the hype around the RPG further.
When Dragon’s Dogma 2 is released on March 22, 2024, there is one thing I want most: to start playing. Yes, I’m one of those players who usually doesn’t spend too much time creating their character.
Depending on the scope of an editor, I never spend more than ten minutes in it. Not because I don’t enjoy creating my character, but because I generally can’t wait to dive straight into the game.
It works in my favor that Capcom has decided to make the extensive editor available before release for Dragon’s Dogma 2. And it’s free, mind you. This is a clever marketing move that works.
I can finally take my time
I have already launched the editor and created two characters. On one hand, my Awakened, which is my player character, and on the other hand, my main Pawn. That’s what the AI companions in the game are called.
And since I don’t have the quiet voice in the background urging me to jump into the game quickly, I’m taking my time. Taking my time for me means: about an hour per character. That is, as mentioned at the beginning, quite long by my standards.
Why do I take so long? The numerous options to customize my character keep me engaged. They allow me to try out different combinations and choose details like the character’s walk. How high does the character hold their elbow? How far does the eyebrow protrude?
These are small details that will hardly be noticeable in the ongoing game. Nevertheless, I get lost in the system of sliders and boxes. When the game is released, I can pick up my characters and jump right in. The anticipation for it has already risen because I know with whom I will start the adventure.
The community is already talking about the game
Other players may feel the same way I do. Those who know for sure that they will play Dragon’s Dogma 2. Everyone else now has the opportunity to create a character without spending any money. And what characters they are!
Already during its first presentation, the editor made an impression with its enormous scope. The numerous customization options allow us players to create very detailed characters.
I can recreate myself – or for example, a character from pop culture. How well this works is currently shown by countless players on Reddit.
Whether it’s Timothée Chalamet, who is currently seen in Dune 2, or Geralt of Rivia: the community has been experimenting in the editor all weekend long. The results are truly impressive.
And since I can recruit other players’ Pawns in Dragon’s Dogma 2, just like in the first part, it might happen that I wander around with an absurd mix of characters from pop culture.
Why is it therefore brilliant to release the editor now? Firstly, the gaming press is reporting on it. Secondly, players have the opportunity to already weigh in. The community is already interacting with each other before the release. For instance, on Reddit.
This brings a lot of attention to the game from users’ side – even before it has officially been released. The anticipation for the release is rising as people hype each other up.
It could very well be that some players get carried away by the excitement and only then make a purchasing decision. And that without much advertising effort. Capcom simply allows the players to take the lead and has enough confidence to say: We believe that our editor will convince you. Among the inspirations for Dragon’s Dogma 2 was Rockstar’s GTA 5.
