The long-awaited continuation of the popular RPG Dragon’s Dogma
is about to be released, and with it comes an exciting new feature: the Beastren race. The developers recently revealed that the idea for this playable race has been on their minds since the development of the first part.
But what exactly is Dragon’s Dogma 2? The game is an action RPG and the sequel to the successful title from 2012. Players take on the role of an Awakened who embarks on an epic journey to defeat a powerful dragon. Along the way, they team up with pawns, combat monsters, and complete quests to tackle the dragon’s dogma.

What do the developers say? The decision to introduce the Beastren race only in Dragon’s Dogma 2 was not an easy one. Capcom’s game designer, Hideaki Itsuno, stated on X that they originally planned to introduce the furry race in the first game.
However, the technology at the time made it difficult to show multiple fur-covered characters on screen. But now, with Dragon’s Dogma 2, we can finally realize our vision

Beastren
are furry, cat-like beings reminiscent of races like Hrotghar from Final Fantasy XIV.
What’s behind it? The original Dragon’s Dogma was first released in 2012 on Xbox 360 and PS3. Since then, technology has advanced significantly, opening up new possibilities for the design and representation of worlds and characters.
Back then, there were earlier examples like Star Fox Adventures on the GameCube, which could impressively display fur (via GamesRadar).
However, the implementation of such detailed fur textures could have led to performance issues, especially on the consoles of that time, which already struggled to maintain stable 30 FPS.
Therefore, the developers likely decided against introducing the Beastren in the first part of Dragon’s Dogma.
