The PlayStation Showcase 2023 has brought some great announcements and reveals, says MeinMMO author Jakob Gerden. However, a personal favorite of his is a particular game, namely Dragon’s Dogma 2 from game developer Capcom. A reveal trailer was released during the showcase. Why it brings him back to the roots as an MMORPG player, namely solo RPGs, you can find out here.
What does the reveal trailer show? Admittedly, the trailer does not reveal too many details about the gameplay. Instead, it brims with cinematics and combat scenes that promise an action spectacle.
Following the already made announcement, the reveal trailer gives us a proper first look at what Dragon’s Dogma 2 has to offer.
Watch the reveal trailer for Dragon’s Dogma 2 here.
It impresses with a graphical upgrade over the first part and shows again the features that made the first part so special:
- A presumably open world set in a medieval fantasy realm filled with forests and mountain ranges.
- Characters that remind me of people from Game of Thrones, but also from The Witcher, specifically Yennefer here.
- Fabulous battles reminiscent of The Witcher or magical skills akin to a bestseller like Hogwarts Legacy.
- You see boss monsters, including a griffin that also reminds you of the king griffin from The Witcher universe, or a supposed chimera as well as a red dragon – adversaries from the first part.
The musical accompaniment raises my expectations even more. The title makes it difficult for me to ignore this action RPG, especially as an MMORPG lover, due to all the above-mentioned features. Not to mention I was already fascinated by the first part.
It might eventually lead me to temporarily set aside my beloved MMORPGs and finally play another RPG from the Far East after the Witcher series. What the Witcher series plans for the future, you can read here.
Dragon’s Dogma rekindles my love for solo RPGs
Dragon’s Dogma 2 offers everything I have been missing more and loved in part 1.
- Fights against giant opponents, like in Shadow of the Colossus on the PlayStation 2, where you had to climb along them to get to the creature’s weak points. A proverbial battle like David against Goliath.
- Then there’s the open world, which seemed infinitely large to me, and the group play that I enjoyed back then in Baldur’s Gate or the Dragon Age series.
- The setting is also crucial. A classic fantasy world inspired by the Middle Ages has always been part of an RPG for me.
If one goes by the dramaturgy in the reveal trailer, there could also be a good story hidden. How this plays out, with twists that could provide one or the other surprise, cannot be answered at this point.
Nonetheless, it reminds me of the good old days when the internet was not always available. You also want to find yourself in an RPG that is specifically woven around you. Thus, I sometimes miss in MMORPGs the feeling of having made an important contribution to the game.
Instead of being just a part of the whole – as it often seems in MMORPGs, I also want to be at the center of the story. And apparently, only solo RPGs can offer me that.
What kind of game is this? Dragon’s Dogma is the highly anticipated sequel to the action RPG from 2012. It is set to release on PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam. The game comes from Capcom. It revolves around an Awakened
who wakes up in a dungeon. He is missing his heart, which, as in part 1, was stolen by a bloodthirsty dragon.
This dragon devastates everything in its path. Meanwhile, it is up to you to find out who our protagonist is and where his destiny will lead him. The developer moreover promises the following features (via nichegamer.com):
- The gameplay offers you different ways to tackle things. Use up to 3
Pawns
, artificial beings that have emerged from the rift and stand by your side. - Climb, manipulate, and fight various monsters.
- Choose from different weapons such as swords, bows, or use magic to defeat your enemies.
- Customize your character to your liking and choose from various vocations.
For me, this game is one of my most anticipated RPGs this year. I just hope the release doesn’t take too long. Which RPGs you might like otherwise, you can read at this point.
