Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and the other Dragon Ball animes feature numerous sagas. MeinMMO has created a ranking of the best story arcs, many scenes of which still remain in our memory today.
Attention, spoilers: This ranking contains spoilers up to the end of the Super Hero saga. If you haven’t gotten that far in the story yet, come back at a later time.
What criteria were used to create the ranking? To be included in the MeinMMO ranking, the sagas had to meet one or more of the following criteria:
- There were important moments in the saga that impacted the future of Dragon Ball
- There is a particularly cool setting that stands out from previous locations
- The fighters can shine in exciting battles, for which we have created a separate ranking
- The saga is complete in the manga
The ranking was created based on subjective feelings. If you disagree, feel free to let us know! Write in the comments which sagas you would have included in the ranking instead.
Rank 5: Piccolo Saga

- Anime: Dragon Ball
- Episodes: 100-153
The Piccolo Saga is the only one from the original anime to make it into this ranking. The saga is likely the one with the darkest tone from Son Goku’s early days. Demon King Piccolo was a serious opponent and pushed little Goku to his limits.
The battles against Piccolo set the tone for the subsequent sagas. The Demon King was a threatening opponent, and the fights against him showed in which direction the following conflicts would develop. Therefore, we consider this saga to be the best from the Dragon Ball Z era.
Piccolo Jr. also did his part well, serving as the perfect bridge between Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. Son Goku is seen for the first time as an adult and increasingly relies on Ki attacks instead of Martial Arts. He also becomes one of the most beloved characters in the entire series.
Rank 4: Universe Tournament Saga

- Anime: Dragon Ball Super
- Episodes: 77-131
The great Universe Tournament is perhaps the most important fight that Son Goku and his companions have had to participate in. We get to know the different universes and witness how Son Goku and his friends must engage in large battles to prevent their destruction by King Zeno.
Each of the characters from the Z team gets their big moment, even Master Roshi and Tien Shinhan are included. Additionally, numerous new and interesting characters like Jiren or Ribrianne are introduced.
The only flaw in this saga is that there is no final boss for the team to face. Thus, the big, exciting finale is missing. Nevertheless, the many smaller battles are enough for the Universe Tournament Saga to land in 4th place.
