Dragon Age: The Veilguard has been struggling with criticism since its announcement: Many find the graphics simply too colorful. On PC, this can be changed thanks to a setting.
What is the issue? The predecessors of Dragon Age: The Veilguard were visually darker and more mature. In comparison, the colorful and somewhat cartoonish look of the fourth part has already disturbed many longtime fans since the announcement.
Now that the game has been released, comparisons to Disney or Pixar movies are being made. The characters supposedly have no realistic faces, and the color scheme is simply not dark enough. While there are some options to make at least your character look a bit more presentable in the editor, a simple trick on PC helps to make the game overall look darker.
With a few clicks to a darker Dragon Age
How does the trick work? If you are playing on PC, you need to follow a few simple steps to get a less colorful and shiny image:
- Shut down the game and open the “Bioware” folder in your documents.
- Open the folder of Dragon Age: The Veilguard and then select “settings”.
- Open the file “ProfileOptions_profile” with a program like Notepad.
- Look for the entry “GstRender.UI_Bloom 1” and change the number to 0.
- Save and close the file.
And that’s it. The game will indeed look darker and “more realistic”. Just the depth of field suffers a bit from this. In the community, some players have already tried the trick.
Does this satisfy the fans? On Reddit, user Braunb8888 shared the trick and quickly received feedback from other players:
- “I watched comparisons on YouTube, and turning it off seems to affect the lighting and depth of field a bit. But it looks so much better,” writes Lucapardi.

Unfortunately, as of now, there is no way to disable bloom on consoles in this way.
With this simple change, the overall image becomes a bit darker, and this is well-received by fans. Other differences to the predecessors, of course, still remain.
