With Minecraft , you can make a lot of money. However, it seems nobody expected that many children would apply for a real job – which is quite cute.
It’s an old hat that you can finance your living with Minecraft, if you can impress enough people. Some of the biggest YouTubers and streamers play Minecraft, entertain millions, and can live off the game and the videos.
However, there is also a “real” job for Minecraft – but many children have applied, which the employer probably did not anticipate.
What is it about? The company WhatShed is based in the UK and specializes in garden design and landscaping. They offer their clients tailored suggestions on how to design their own garden. WhatShed thought they could establish a foothold in the digital realm to also offer landscaping in Minecraft.
For this, there was a job posting.
The job is actually quite well-paid, starting from £50 an hour (approximately €58).
What happened? As expected, there were quite a few inquiries for this position. But particularly interesting: a large portion of the applicants are children. Because who wouldn’t find it tempting to play Minecraft all day, give adults tips on how to design their gaming world, and – on the side – earn a “pocket money” hourly wage that most adults never achieve.
Accordingly, the comments under the job offer are quite entertaining:
“I have an Xbox and a lot of time because I’m 12”
The comment section under the job offer is quite entertaining and shows the contributions of many children and teenagers who can wonderfully imagine this dream job. Especially the content of the comments is simply funny or cute, as you see how inexperienced and motivated some of the writers are. For example, one reads:
- “I’m 12, if that’s okay… I can also work on weekends and 6-7 hours on weekdays.”
- “I’ve played Minecraft almost every day since I was 7. I’m now 10.”
- “My father owns a gardening business, so I have a lot of experience with gardening and landscaping. I also have a lot of free time. Since I’m still so young, kids won’t feel as intimidated as they would by a 30 or 40-year-old. As you can see, I have all the necessary skills and requirements for this job.”
- “I’ve been playing Minecraft for 8 years, I’m 13.”
Some even go further and attach a video of their previous achievements.
- “Here is an example of my landscaping. 100% Survival mode”
Could they get the job? In theory, some children could actually take the job, since just like in Germany, some jobs in the UK are allowed from the age of 13 – including agriculture, although the legislator probably never considered “virtual agriculture”.
Practically, however, the children probably have no chance, as the age limit starts at 21. But maybe they’ll get lucky if they state their actual age under “Other”.
Regardless of whether it was a misjudgment by WhatShed or a thoughtful PR move – the outcome is quite entertaining. Let someone say that today’s youth is lazy and doesn’t want to work.
