During the huge Dota 2 tournament “The International”, there was a decisive battle between Royal Never Give Up and Alliance. The stage couldn’t be bigger, as Alliance’s captain made a critical mistake: he picked the wrong hero. The reaction, however, is delightful.
What is the situation? Currently, the huge tournament “Dota 2 International” is taking place. It involves a massive prize pool of over 33 million $, the best teams in the world are there – it’s a really big deal for everyone involved.
Two teams faced off in a decisive match. It was a “Best of One” – whoever loses is eliminated from the tournament.
They played:
- The Chinese team Royal Never Give Up
- And Alliance, a team from Europe based in Sweden
Misclick with big consequences – because it’s all on the line
This is the mistake: The mistake does not happen in the game, but in the “Pick and Ban” phase. Here, players in MOBA games select their own heroes and ban certain heroes from being played by their opponents.
The clock was ticking down and the pressure was mounting: The captain of Alliance wanted to ban the hero Gyrocopter for the opponents, but instead he chose Gyrocopter as the hero for his own team.
While Gyrocopter is no longer available for the opposing team, the hero apparently did not fit into Alliance’s strategy at all.
That’s why the mistake is so serious: The mistake is so grave because it cannot be corrected or adjusted anymore. The team then has to go into the match with this “suboptimal” lineup – at a high level this is often already a foregone conclusion in Dota 2.
Especially bad is the mistake because it is completely unnecessary.

This is what happens in the Twitch clip: In the clip, you can wonderfully see how team captain Aydin “iNSaNiA” Sarkoh makes this pick, nervously anticipates the game, and then slowly realizes what he has done. He asks: “Seriously? Did that just happen?”
The Chinese seem to be having a great time as they realize that the Swedes made a terrible mistake. One even says: “They’re doomed.”
Then the Swedes seem to rally together and want to make something of the situation. At the end of the Twitch clip, the captain can even smile a bit wryly. He has no other choice but to deal with the situation.
This is how it all ended: As dexerto reports, Alliance actually lost the match and was eliminated. But it was by no means clear – the game lasted 40 minutes and Alliance made them pay dearly. They still go home while Royal Never Give Up continues to fight for the gigantic prize pool of the Dota 2 International.
