With Fallout 76, fans of the post-apocalyptic role-playing series can expect an online game that, according to Bethesda’s Pete Hines, will not unfold as many might imagine.

Fallout 76 Multiplayer is not what many expect
Fallout 76 is not an MMORPG: According to Pete Hines, many players think of an MMORPG when they hear the words “multiplayer” and “online.” However, Fallout 76 will definitely not be that. You will not encounter hundreds or thousands of other players, but only dozens. And that in a very large game world.
Furthermore, there are no NPCs who all players can approach to get quests. The very fact that it is a post-apocalyptic scenario with very few survivors excludes the “massively” from the term MMORPG.
Fallout 76 is not an online shooter: Others think of an online shooter when it comes to Fallout 76, according to Pete Hines. But this is not true. You will not be constantly fighting each other since there are also quests to complete (which you will receive from robots or computer terminals). The world is meant to be explored, and you build your own base.
Players should not expect a battle royale shooter where everyone fights until only one remains.
Fallout 76 does not focus on PvP: It is also a misconception, according to Pete Hines, that Fallout 76 will be a PvP-heavy game. While fights between players can happen, the game promotes more cooperative gameplay. Moreover, it is not possible to track down a defeated opponent and eliminate them over and over again. The so-called “griefing” is prevented by the game with special security measures.
PvP in Fallout 76 does not mean that you should attack everything and everyone. PvP is more of a challenge system.
Bethesda wants to offer something special
Fallout 76 is a unique gaming experience: No MMORPG, no online shooter, no focus on PvP. What will Fallout 76 be then? It is supposed to be something new and special. Bethesda does not follow trends just because certain types of games are popular at a certain time. Bethesda develops games that are meant to be fun and always offer a special approach.
And this also applies to Fallout 76. According to Bethesda, it represents a unique gaming experience that cannot be compared to other games. Therefore, the multiplayer part of the game will not unfold as many might imagine.
Bethesda’s focus remains on single-player experiences. With Wolfenstein, Rage 2, Doom Eternal, and the announcement of the role-playing games Starfield and The Elder Scrolls 6, Bethesda wants to demonstrate that the company’s focus remains on single-player games. Even Pete Hines admits that he mainly plays alone – and that should also be possible in Fallout 76. Fans need not fear that the studio will only develop online games in the future.
