PUBG is simply made for Twitch
In 2017, the rise of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, a battle royale shooter where anything can happen at any moment, began. Instead of relying on an advertising campaign or large TV spots, PUBG reached its fans through word of mouth and the streaming service Twitch. But why is PUBG so popular on Twitch?
- Other popular games on Twitch like League of Legends start relatively calm in the beginning. They only lead to team fights and highlights after a few minutes. PUBG is different, you never know where an enemy is hiding and anything can happen at any moment.
- While in LoL, one team gains an advantage and slowly builds it up to claim victory, in PUBG the tide of battle can turn at any moment.
- Mechanisms such as danger zones or lucky loot raise the adrenaline level.
- Additionally, PUBG is mostly a single-player game. The streamer is constantly in the spotlight of the viewers.
- And PUBG is very readable and understandable. Even without prior knowledge, the rules are clear.
Dr. DisRespect, the bad boy of Twitch
The battle royale gameplay quickly became the hot topic. Also because it was so well suited for streaming. One of the leading streamers in PUBG is Guy Beahm, a former game designer. His fans know and love him as Macho-Streamer DrDisRespect, who makes jokes with his mustache and mullet.
He’s not that bad either. According to his own claims, DisRespect is the simply best sniper in the game who never loses a sniper fight. That just doesn’t happen.
The rise of the Doctor
At the end of 2017, the star of the doctor rose. With numerous mini-scandals, conflicts, and insider gangs, he intrigued and entertained his 1.4 million followers.
- He had a confrontation with PlayerUnknown
- drove up to E3 in a Lamborghini
- or showed himself emotionally touched in the stream when he met a fan
By the end of the year, he even won the Video Game Award for Streamer of the Year.
However, DrDisrespect then took a break. He claimed to have been unfaithful to his wife, didn’t want to be the man who does such things, and announced a longer hiatus.
That break ends tonight. At 8:00 PM, DisRespect will stream again. In the meantime, PUBG has lost some of its shine from a few months ago. Especially cheaters are causing problems for the game. But perhaps the doctor knows the right recipe.
DrDisRespect destroys Twitch
Update 8:10 PM: Apparently there are problems with the stream. The doctor tweets 7 minutes after he went live: “I destroyed Twitch.” The stream is currently offline – just like all of Twitch.
Update 8:23: Now it’s working after a bit of a delay. DrDisRespect is going live on Twitch. That was quite a good start. 172,000 people are already in the stream – and the numbers are clearly rising.
