In March 2024, the Oscars will be awarded again. After a leak, we now know that one film did not make it onto the list for Best Visual Effects. This is discussed by Marco Risch from Nerdkultur in his new video.

How is Quantumania supposed to be better than Oppenheimer? In his video, Marco talks about how Variety leaked an initial Oscar list. It is said to include all 20 films that qualify for the category “Best Visual Effects”.
The scandal that spread across the internet afterwards? Oppenheimer did not make it onto this list. Instead, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania did, which is considered one of the ugliest as well as one of the worst MCU films, according to Marco.
At least the other films on the list (e.g., Barbie, The Creator, Guardians of the Galaxy, Napoleon) show how visual effects should look to qualify for this category, as Marco reports to you.
Why didn’t Oppenheimer make it? For everyone wondering why such a film didn’t make it onto the list, Marco has a few answers ready.
The Oscar category itself could already be the decisive point.
Now director Nolan even brags that Oppenheimer completely does without CGI. However, there hasn’t been a separate category for SFX for some time. Unfortunately, the film would then likely fall for critics, which is why it might not have made it onto the list.
