In Destiny 2, an item was discovered in the databases that undoubtedly refers to the exotic rocket launcher Gjallarhorn. What is it all about?
What was discovered? With the launch of Season 6, the databases for Destiny 2 were updated. Resourceful Guardians can now search through them and find items that are already in the game or that will be activated at some point during the season.
Among these items that are not yet in the game is “The Midnight Special.” It initially sounds relatively uninteresting, but the icon for the object makes it much more exciting:
What kind of item is this? The icon unmistakably shows the Gjallarhorn from Destiny 1. This was an exotic rocket launcher that dominated the entire game in its first year and gained cult status.
The description of the Midnight Special emphasizes that the item must have something to do with the Gjallarhorn. It is described as “a convincing (but non-functional) copy of a famous weapon.”
The “famous weapon” likely proves that Bungie did not simply make a mistake with the icon, but that it was intentionally chosen.
So is the Gjallarhorn coming back?
That’s why a “real” return is unlikely: The database entry indicates that it is an exotic item, but it cannot be equipped. This is stated clearly in the details (“Introduced in Season 6, cannot be equipped”).
Also, the item description clearly states that it is a non-functional copy. In other words, the Midnight Special is a replica of the Gjallarhorn that cannot be used as a weapon.
A return of the real, working Gjallarhorn as the Guardians know it is therefore neither confirmed nor likely. Bungie might even just be trolling the Guardians with this item in the databases, and it might never find its way into the game.
Is there hope for a return? However, a return cannot be completely ruled out. The Midnight Special might serve as a future item that triggers a quest leading to the Gjallarhorn.
However, currently, only speculation can be made about this. Right now, it seems that this Gjallarhorn replica will leave very little room for use.
