That Riot Games, the creators of League of Legends and Valorant, are working on an MMORPG in the LoL universe has been known since 2020. But do you remember the strange announcement? It was all planned, says the CEO now.
What kind of game is it? Nobody knows for sure, and actually, not inaccurately either. Because almost no information is known about the MMORPG in the LoL universe. Not even the name is confirmed.
It’s also unclear whether the MMORPG is the Project F that was announced in 2019, or if Project F is something entirely different. Riot had announced the various projects for the 10th anniversary of League, from which Valorant ultimately emerged from Project A.
At the presentation, in 2019 there was only a 40-second clip about Project F. But that could just as easily be an adventure game from an isometric perspective and not the MMORPG.
How was it announced? But regardless of whether we are talking about Project F or another game that will be the MMORPG, the announcement was strange. Because only since a tweet from the former game designer of LoL, Greg Street, in 2020, we know that it will be an MMORPG.
He announced on Twitter on December 18, 2020, that he will expand the League universe with a “massive” new game that many fans wish for. At the same time, he said that Riot would also be hiring new people in this regard.
Many fans asked, and just minutes later he added: Yes, it is an MMO. Only when asked by the PCGamer website, did the company confirm directly with Riot Games that they are indeed working on an MMORPG.
Another game announced in 2019 is the fighter Project L, which has significantly more information:
“The big answers will come when we have more confidence”
Riot wanted it exactly like this: Now, the head of the MMORPG confirms on Twitter that this strange situation was intentional and that it was a decision of the CEO to announce the game in this way.
He also states that the early presentation was chosen because, with such a large project involving so many people, it would have leaked out anyway in the end. Additionally, an early announcement is also a good way to find suitable personnel.
Because that is also needed, according to CEO Greg Street. He says: “Everyone at least somewhat knows how to make an MMORPG. But you need real veterans to actually make it happen. Also, massive costs and a lot of time.”
Here you can read the thread yourself:
Why is there little information? Greg Street also explains this in his thread. He writes that more confidence is needed to show people more about the LoL MMORPG. Greg assures that they are on a good path and everything is going as it should.
He also describes that one should neither go public too early nor too late. The team does not want to provide an “E3 experience” by showing an almost finished game. Much rather, Riot wants to make sure that there can still be a turnaround after “showing” the content and respond to feedback.
They do not want to have to save a game with a rocky start, rather the MMORPG will be postponed further, Street continues. In the end, people should say: “Yes, it was worth the wait, this is what I wanted.”
What do you think of the LoL MMORPG? Are you excited about the game and is it even relevant to you so far? Or is it still too far off? Do you think Project F will become its own game or is it indeed the MMO? Feel free to let us know in the comments here at MeinMMO.
