The trailer for the new project by Larian Studios, Divinity, sparked a lot of reactions at the Game Awards 2025, among viewers and fans. While there is a general consensus that it contains intense content, whether that generates excitement or just disgust divides the community. What do you think about it?
What divides the gaming community? The trailer for Divinity, the newly announced project by the creators of Baldur’s Gate 3, made its mark within the community during and after the Game Awards 2025. The trailer shows a celebration filled with joyful and (less) drunken people preparing and celebrating some kind of sacrifice. Larian does not hold back on the gross factor and gruesome content, presenting a trailer that is hard to forget – for both positive and negative reasons. For these reasons and due to age restrictions, it is only available on YouTube, where Larian explicitly states: strictly for adults.
Nevertheless, alongside the eager voices of fans and those who want to become fans, there are some individuals who are not at all thrilled about the way the announcement was made. They express that they find the direction in which Larian is taking Divinity not only disappointing but also regrettable.
A trailer full of blood, horror, and sex, but also humor, that screams Divinity
What do people criticize about the trailer? That the trailer caused a strong reaction and shocked many viewers is undeniable. Based on some community comments, it is clear that there are people who do not approve of this shock factor, especially not during the airing of the Game Awards:
“They pulled the dullest clichés of shocking images, body horror, disgust, and pointless shock sexuality, what’s up with that?” one user comments on Reddit, and users also express on Facebook why they are not convinced by the announcement: “This is one of those things that would deserve a 10/10 with the right audience. But to show it where anyone and their children could see it was, in my opinion, a bit too much. I found the trailer hardcore already, and I’m an adult man.”
However, other users emphasize that this trailer (as it warns from the start) is not suitable for children and that the Game Awards honor and present games that are rated for ages 18 and up.
However, the contrast in their program also shocked adults:
“I find the trailer great, but honestly, I also found it quite frightening. Seeing a man burning alive with supernatural horror effects is not something I expected to see on the same screen where Donkey Kong Bananza was featured” (ianperesmusic under the trailer on YouTube).
Some users’ opinions regarding the disgust should not be dismissed. However, there are voices that recognize the argument and say: “That is so disgusting. I love it” (lolpersephone on Reddit).
What are the enthusiastic reactions to the trailer? Under the trailer on YouTube and on Reddit, fans share how they are absolutely thrilled and looking forward to what Larian revealed to them at the Game Awards, despite – or because of – the intense content:
“The trailer is gross, but I’m not mad about it,” writes lemonandcake13 in the GirlGamers subreddit, “I trust Larian and think it fits well as a successor to BG3. I just hope they find the right balance between quirkiness and darkness.”
Grouchy-Coast does not want to deny the daring step but finds the trailer authentic precisely because of its content, as they shared on Reddit: “This trailer literally screams Divinity every time. It contains blood, body horror, sex, and humor. I think it is even the ‘response’ to all those who say Divinity is a silly, generic fantasy series, even though it includes many of these elements.”
This is what MeinMMO editor Caro says: First of all, I want to say – I have not played any Divinity games yet, but I have become a huge fan of Larian as an absolute BG3 ultra, and I am totally hyped from the trailer to play Divinity itself, as well as the older entries in the series.
Now to the trailer: I did not watch it live, but early at 5 AM on YouTube. Warnings like “for adults only” I rarely take seriously, as the content does not shock me often. And after watching it for the first time, I thought: “Oh man … this is the first genuinely placed ‘for adults only’ that I can remember.”
The visual content is macabre, brutal, and yes, extremely disgusting. But it stood in stark contrast to the celebrations, the joyous people, and that excited clapping child when the man is burned alive in excruciating detail. And it was precisely this contrast that made the scene so grotesque – which is why the trailer was able to capture me completely.
I want to know what the hell is happening in this world that leads to such a scene. It makes me curious about the culture, the dark forces, and the story that Larian is hinting at. Give me the dark cult, fanatical followers, and images that ruthlessly show how horrible all of this is.
Do I want to watch the trailer often? No, certainly not. But for me, it was the absolute highlight of this year’s Game Awards.
What did you think of the trailer? Too much? Just right? … Too little? (We are definitely curious about your justifications).
