When Disney bought Lucasfilm, many comics, books, and other stories were removed from the canon by Disney. However, sometimes the new productions revisit old concepts and stories. This is also the case with Star Wars: The Acolyte, which introduces a forbidden lightsaber technique.
Spoiler alert: The following article contains spoilers for episode 5 of Star Wars: The Acolyte.
What is Star Wars Legends? Before Disney’s acquisition, there was the Star Wars Expanded Universe. These were stories from comics, books, video games, TV shows (except for The Clone Wars), and also toys. When Disney took over, they announced in 2014 that the true
canon begins with their new films. Everything else is now called Star Wars Legends and no longer counts as official continuity (via Wookiepedia).
Many fans are still not happy about this, as some of the most popular characters come from Legends. Some even wish that Disney would adapt stories from it. The latest episode of Star Wars: The Acolyte takes a step in this direction and officially introduces a forbidden
lightsaber technique.

A Sith shows his prowess in battle
In episode 5 of Star Wars: The Acolyte, there is finally lightsaber action and a duel between Jedi Master Sol and his companions against a Sith who should not exist. Both engage in a fierce battle, with the Jedi using their honorable technique against an unknown sword technique.
During the fight, the Sith can be seen switching his saber on and off to confuse his opponent and gain an advantage. This technique was already showcased 30 years ago in a Star Wars audio drama, as Screen Rant describes.
The technique is called Tràkata and is primarily used in combination with two lightsabers, just as shown in The Acolyte. Among the Jedi, this technique is forbidden, as it is not an honorable fighting style and is more based on deception and trickery. However, the Sith in The Acolyte manages to win using this technique and the Force.
The Acolyte is a controversial topic among Star Wars fans. Despite such hints at Legends, there are also old rules from George Lucas that are ignored by the series, which does not please fans.
Despite much criticism, the use of Tràkata is a good sign for the possible return of other stories and aspects from Star Wars Legends. What do you think about it? Do you think it’s good or are you no longer interested in the series? Let us know in the comments.
