In October, a new update called Age of Discovery will be released for PC players of Star Trek Online. In it, you can play as a Federation character during the time of the controversial Discovery series.
What is Age of Discovery? The new update for Star Trek Online is based on the latest Star Trek television series Discovery. Therefore, the story takes place before the classic original Star Trek series featuring Kirk, Spock, and others. Previously, there were premium ships and sparkly uniforms from Discovery available in the game.
What is included in Age of Discovery? With the update, the first chapter of a new storyline will be introduced, which will take place entirely in the Discovery timeline. There will be two episodes, and further updates will expand this story and add new locations and characters.
You will create a character from the Starfleet in the Discovery timeline and will even receive your own tutorial. The update also includes additional reputation tiers, a new task force, and other new gameplay features.
On the road with Tilly: As a special highlight, the developers have included Cadet Tilly from the series in the game. The lively young officer was already a fan favorite in the series and will play an important role in the first mission of the new storyline.
Tilly in the game is voiced by the original actress Mary Wiseman.
When will the new update be released? Age of Discovery will be released on October 9, 2018, for PC. The console version will come out a bit later as usual.
Discovery is controversial
How are fans reacting? Star Trek: Discovery is a series that divides the Star Trek fan community. Many felt that the new series strayed too far from the established Star Trek canon. The aggressive storyline, controversial plot twists, and especially the redesign of the Klingons as grunting space orcs did not sit well with many fans.
Others, however, loved Discovery precisely because it was something different from what Star Trek fans were used to.
Fans are divided: The reactions to the Discovery update are similarly mixed. Some fans have had enough of Star Trek Online and never want to touch it again if the upcoming episodes are solely focused on the Discovery universe they despise.
Others, however, are looking forward to a new storyline in a fresh timeline and especially to Cadet Tilly as an NPC in the new episodes.
