What is it? Hunt: Showdown belongs to a genre of shooters that does not yet have an established name. Comparable games include Escape from Tarkov or the Hazard Zone game mode from Battlefield 2042. The game takes you into a Western fantasy scenario in 1895 and makes you into what you have always wanted to be: a monster-hunting cowboy with shotguns and axes.
Hunt: Showdown is a PvP shooter with PvE elements, and is therefore sometimes referred to as a PvPvE (Player vs. Player vs. Environment) shooter. Thus, you are not just playing against other players, but also against computer-controlled enemies.
The basic structure of a match consists of searching for clues to where a monster is hiding. Then you need to find this monster, kill it, send it back to hell, and get the loot to one of the three extraction points. Up to 10 other players compete for the same goal.
Additionally, Hunt: Showdown features a permadeath system. If you die, you lose your character and everything he possessed – this applies to other matches as well.
What are the highlights?
- Unique ‘Weird West’ setting
- Unique game mode
- Fantastic sound design
- High tension due to permadeath
- Great (horror) atmosphere
- A shooter where it often makes sense not to shoot.
- Many beginner-friendly features
- Very slow gameplay pace, interrupted by moments of fast and explosive action
Who should play it? Hunt: Showdown is recommended for those who enjoy the tension from battle royales but want to play something different. Especially the unique setting, the distinctive gameplay pace, and the unconventional game mode make Hunt a completely different gaming experience.
