Digital Extremes, the developers of Warframe, are reportedly working on another game according to an interim report from parent company Leyou Tech Hold. It is said to be a Free2Play MMO.
The Canadian studio Digital Extremes has been working on Warframe since 2013 and has not done much else of significance since then. Only a Star Trek game and “Sword Coast Legends” were developed alongside Warframe, and none of these games has come close to the loot shooter.
The recently announced “The Amazing Eternals”, a hybrid game of shooter and card game, has now been put on hold.
But apparently, the unfortunate card shooter was not the only new project from the Canadians.
New MMO planned
Leyou, a Chinese company that purchased Digital Extremes in 2015, recently released an interim report about its activities and those of its subsidiaries. The report mentioned the success of Warframe but also announced something completely new.
Fun fact: Leyou was originally a company that traded in poultry and was called Sumpo Food. However, they have since abandoned the poultry business.
According to Leyou’s report, Digital Extremes is working on a new project that is supposed to be a Free2Play action MMO. It is set to enter alpha in 2017 and be released in 2018.
Will the new game have a connection to Warframe?
But what will it be? Is Digital Extremes trying something entirely new or are the Canadians building their game on the existing Warframe universe?
At least Warframe has been the company’s most successful project in recent years, and the related universe is full of details and mysteries. It is really the ideal setting for an MMO.
Or is it “just” a retro MMO that DE is releasing?
Update: The worst-case scenario for Warframe fans is probably that Leyou refers to the “new MMO” from Digital Extremes as the game “Survived by”, a retro MMO from another Canadian studio. Digital Extremes is only acting as the publisher here.
