In Diablo Immortal, a secret war rages between two factions, the Shadows and the Immortals. You can get to know both factions and join them, but only if you are worthy. MeinMMO reveals everything you need to know about the system.
What are Shadows and Immortals? The two factions are humans or Nephalem who ensure the protection of the world. They are the frontline against the forces of hell and heaven. The entire story of Diablo Immortal is based on them.
In the MMO, the two factions serve as competing parties in PvP. They fight against each other in battles. Certain content is reserved exclusively for members of the Shadows or the Immortals, and few players will ever see the biggest of these events.
While pursuing the campaign in Diablo Immortal, you will encounter the Shadows and the Immortals starting at level 43 and will be offered to join the Shadows. However, it’s not as easy as it sounds. MeinMMO explains how to do it and why it’s worth it.

Becoming a Shadow in Diablo Immortal
How do I join the Shadows? At level 43, you will receive a quest through your guide to familiarize yourself with the Shadows and the Immortals. You are supposed to complete some tasks that will explain what the factions are about.
Along the way, you will learn about the game modes that await you, and eventually even the final battle of the “Cycle of Strife”. The quests only require you to dispose of certain opponents in specific instances.
The actual joining of the Shadows comes afterward. You will be asked to join the Shadow lottery. This takes place every day at 12:00 PM, 6:00 PM, and 9:00 PM server time. Here’s how to join:
- visit the Mysterious Guest in the tavern in Westmark
- sign up for the Shadow lottery
- if you are selected, visit the guest again
- face Akeba’s trial, in which you must defeat 3 champions
The trial is not particularly difficult. Should you fail it or not be selected, you can enter the lottery again. Alternatively, players who are already Shadows can simply invite you.
How do I invite someone? For winning the trial, you will receive Akeba’s emblem. If you are accepted into the Shadows, you will receive 2 – one for yourself and one for someone else.
If you want to invite a friend or interested person, just select them in your friends list. By clicking or tapping on their portrait, the context menu will open. Select “Invite to Shadows” and your friend will have the opportunity to join.
As a Shadow, you can also participate in the lottery. If you are selected, you must take the trial again and receive additional emblems to invite new members.
What advantages do Shadows have? Shadows can rise in reputation ranks, which grant them bonuses to damage and defense. They also have access to special content that rewards them even more:
- Contracts that reward with a lot of experience points, gold, and items
- Path of Blood for more points to rank up
- Looting the treasury for tons of gold, Hilt, and a chance at Legendaries
- Meetings that provide a small boost of resources
- the great Shadow war against the Immortals, more on that below
As a Shadow, you should also look for a clan, as there are additional benefits such as more experience points. This is especially worth it during leveling but also later for Paragon levels.
Shadow Clans and Why They Are Worth It
Shadows can no longer join “normal” adventurer clans. Some players painfully realize this when they are expelled from their own guilds. Instead, there are special Shadow clans.
These also accommodate 100 players and offer benefits such as 10% more experience or faster rank increases. In a Shadow clan, you collectively earn points for the clan rank to compete with other clans.
The best clans then compete in a large showdown weekly, with a chance to become Immortals – effectively the bosses of the server.

Shadows or Immortals? These are the factions
The Immortals are something like the protectors of the world. To them, great power has been granted. The Shadows are there to continuously test the Immortals to ensure their power does not corrupt them.
In Diablo Immortal, this means that the Shadows and the Immortals constantly fight against each other. If it turns out that the Immortals are no longer the best fighters, new Shadows rise to become the rulers – your chance to become Immortal.
Joining the Immortals
Every week from Monday morning to Tuesday evening, Shadow clans can sign up for the Shadow War. This will take place during the week and has several stages:
- the Shadow War filters out the 10 strongest clans of the Shadows
- from those clans, 8 selected players face off against 8 Immortals each
- in the Ritual of Banishment, the Shadows must win at least 6 of the battles
- if victorious, they can challenge the leader of the Immortals
- in a 30 vs. 1 battle, the Immortal must be toppled
- if the Shadows are again victorious here, a Battle Royale begins
- the winners become the new Immortals
This is currently the only known way to become Immortal, with up to 500 Immortals per server. Since the first Shadow War will culminate on June 12, 2022, we will be able to reveal more about the exact process from there.
Currently (June 8), it is not yet possible to become Immortal.

What advantages do Immortals have?
Similar to Shadows, Immortals have access to special content. They also rank up, which strengthens them and can prevent the Shadows from raiding their treasury. Additionally, they gain access to:
- special offers at the Hilt vendor
- buffs for attack speed, critical hit chance, and more for the group
- weekly rewards based on participation
- a statue and banners in Westmark and a mention on the honor wall
However, the greatest feature is Kion’s Trial. Here, 48 players can score great rewards in a raid. The trial is divided into 4 groups of 12 players, each of whom must defeat their own bosses.
Be aware that some of this content may change and some information is still based on the beta phase. The first Shadow War is still forthcoming, and in the interview about the future of Diablo Immortal, the head, Wyatt Cheng, revealed that some changes have been made to this very PvP concept. What exactly that is, we will only know later.
