The action RPG Diablo II Resurrected has now been out for a month. But for many, a smooth online gaming experience, as they hoped for, is still not possible 30 days after the release. Angry posts are appearing in the forums by the hour, raising serious accusations against Blizzard. The queues and instability of the servers are wearing on the players’ nerves.
This is the situation:
- Diablo 2 Resurrected was released on September 23. It is a remaster of the 2000 game Diablo II. Upon release, it received good reviews on Metacritic.
- However, there are significant server issues with Diablo II Resurrected. They have led to crashes and prolonged outages. As Blizzard states, people were playing it “too modern”:” They are doing too many boss runs. In this, players start a new game, kill a boss, close the game, and start a new round. Since many more people are doing this in 2021 than before, the servers can’t handle it.
- As a counter to the problem, there are now restrictions on how often new games can be created (via twitter), and there are queues. But many players are still dissatisfied with the current state of Diablo II Resurrected. Especially on Saturday, there were angry protests: Diablo II seemed to be bursting at the seams on Saturday evening our time.
Players threaten with lawsuits, want their money back
This is the mood: When you look into Blizzard’s official forums, it is full of players expressing their frustration towards Blizzard. They demand their money back or threaten with lawsuits. Generally, it is stated:
- The queues are “a disgrace” – one would be stuck in the queue for too long
- Online gaming of Diablo 2 is also unstable – one is often kicked from the queue, has to start over, and falls back to the end
- Blizzard promised to do Diablo 2 Resurrected right – but it is another failure after Warcraft 3 Reforged
- Some people demand their money back and say Blizzard is ruining its reputation, which would also negatively affect Diablo 4
Some believe that the high server load is a problem that is also caused by “Chinese botters.” Apparently, the item trading via Ebay is making the game popular for people who are farming Diablo II specifically to sell items on Ebay.
This makes the situation so difficult for Blizzard: Blizzard is one of the most popular software companies because they have earned a reputation for releasing clean and polished games that come out in a “more mature state” than comparable products from the competition.
The criticism of Diablo II is not directed at the game itself, but at the server structure and the stability of the servers. But it is essential that the servers run well and stably to play Diablo 2 online.
Here, the impression arises that Blizzard has not considered everything in a “relatively easy” task and now seems overwhelmed. Especially the statement that players are playing “too modern” is bitter for some:

The situation is also so challenging for Blizzard because they have had so few releases in recent years: And there has been a lot of criticism of Warcraft III Reforged, the last remaster.
