In Diablo 4, there is real confusion regarding Season 1. Whether it is the seasonal characters or mechanics around the progress you can achieve for the Season journey. Many believe that going through the story again would be a waste of time, but Rod Ferguson, the head of Diablo, disagrees.
What is it about? In Diablo 4, players can skip the story after they have completed it for the first time about the story of demon queen Lilith and the banished angel, Inarius. Many players have wished for this, because when it comes to the seasons, you want to jump straight into the new content without having to go through old content again.
Despite this shortcut, the head of Diablo advises you to play the story again. Not to refresh your memories, but to have a more relaxed experience in Season 1.

That’s why you should play the story for Season 1 again
This is what the head of Diablo says about the campaign: On Twitter, there were uncertainties about how the progress of the season journey is influenced by the campaign, and especially whether you have to complete the campaign for each season. In response, Rod Ferguson replied as follows:
Yes, to participate in the seasonal quest line, the mechanics of the season journey, and the battle pass, you must create a new seasonal character. Playing a campaign with a seasonal character (if you wish to or need to complete it) will also advance the season journey and the battle pass. […] You only need to complete it once for each character on your account and can skip it for every other character thereafter.

While many thought that the campaign in the season is only good for XP, they are mistaken. In fact, by playing the campaign, you also advance your season journey because you can complete tasks during the campaign that grant you progress in your battle pass.
What is a season journey? The season journey in Diablo 4 is a mechanic to collect progress for the battle pass in a current season. A variety of tasks are listed that players can complete during the season. This allows levels in the battle pass and bonuses to be unlocked.
All in all, you should think carefully about whether you skip the story in Season 1, as it might be worth it for you.
