With the new crafting in Season 4 of Diablo 4, new possibilities arise for customizing builds. One trick makes the whole system even easier and clearer.
What is the new upgrade system? Since the start of Season 4, there are two new crafting systems in Diablo 4: Tempering and Masterworking. Furthermore, aspects are now directly transferred to your Codex of Power when you disassemble items. This solves an annoying problem for players.
Once you find better versions of the aspects, they will be upgraded in the Codex. However, you must improve them yourself on your loot. A player suggests a simple trick to help you better find and easily upgrade the aspects you have already equipped.
How to improve aspects with just a few clicks
What trick makes this easier? Since Season 4, all aspects you obtain by disassembling items are stored in the Codex of Power. At the Occultist, you then imprint them onto new items. It helps to use the search function and look for terms like “attack speed” or “damage”.
On Reddit, the user “hArDyGamez” suggested a different search term on May 19. Because once you find aspects in a stronger variant, they will be upgraded in the Codex, but not on the items. At the Occultist, you can see an icon indicating when aspects are already equipped.
You can also enter the term “equipped” in the search bar at the top left. This way, you can see all the aspects on your loot at a glance.
The practical thing about this is: If you first select the already equipped aspect at the Occultist, you will not only see which items are suitable for it. Once you hover your mouse over the aspect, you will see the item on which the aspect is currently located.

What other tricks are there? Another way to quickly find aspects at the Occultist and in the Codex of Power is to mark them as favorites. Favorites are always displayed at the top in both cases. According to “StarkeRealm” (on Reddit), the favorites are marked per character, so nothing gets mixed up.
In the Codex itself, you can use the search function and keywords such as darkness, armor, or damage. Additionally, you can filter by the following categories:
- only my class
- unlockable through a dungeon
- favorite aspects
- newly obtained
When you swap items, the first impulse is often to replace the old items with the new ones and then improve the new ones. However, if you do not remove the old items first, you can quickly check and compare on the right side which aspects you need to imprint on which items.
Also keep in mind with the new crafting system that you should always harden items first before you not only imprint new aspects at the Occultist but also possibly re-roll affixes. The new system is straightforward, but if you upgrade items in the wrong order, you literally throw away gold – and probably also strong items.
