On January 23, Season 3 of Diablo 4 starts. Apart from a few new features, there is still no information available about the theme or the season mechanics. Now Blizzard has at least hinted at what it’s about with a short teaser.
This is the teaser:
- The official X channel of Diablo posted a short tweet with a clip. It shows a scene with a few turning gears and the short phrase: “Evil Looms.” At the end, the silhouette of a creature can also be recognized.
- There is also a note that “arcane powers are stirring.” The interplay of technology and arcane magic is a popular steampunk motif.
- The teaser serves as a first glimpse into the theme of the upcoming Season 3 of Diablo 4, starting on January 23.
When will there be more information? The tweet states that more details about the season are expected on January 16. Presumably, on that day, the season theme and the main contents will be released.
On January 18, there will also be a Campfire Chat, in which the developers will go into detail about Season 3 and answer some questions from the community. Some features that will also be discussed there are already known:
- the seasonal journey, i.e., the theme and the progress of Season 3
- the gameplay features, including already known elements like leaderboards and the weekly challenge dungeon “The Gauntlet”
- various quality-of-life updates
The stream takes place at 6:00 PM German time, and you can watch it on YouTube or Twitch.
During Season 3, there will also be a new update that brings ray tracing to the game:
Another leak is true, runes are coming in Season 3
The teaser with the arcane powers is already a hint for many fans that somehow sorceresses will be in focus. Some have already decided to play this class in Season 3.
Others suspect that the famous Zoltun Kul is hiding behind the guise. This would roughly fit, as the former Horadrim was a master of artifact creation. Arcane constructs and automatons are apparently the main theme of the season.
However, some clever players have discovered an important detail: some of the gears are illuminated with runes. Rune words were supposed to be in the game at the release of Diablo 4 but were then postponed. They could now come with Season 3.
A large part of the community is having fun with the way the season has been announced. The turning gears strongly resemble Grinding Gear Games, the creators of the biggest competitor: Path of Exile.
Whether this was intentional or not can only be speculated. But the connection between the teaser and Path of Exile is already causing a lot of memes and somewhat mocking comments. Path of Exile is considered the top game when it comes to finding the best alternatives to Diablo.
