The upcoming Season 4 of Diablo 4 is approaching soon. MeinMMO editor Benedict Grothaus was able to speak exclusively with Lead Seasons Designer Deric Nuñez and Lead Game Producer Timothy Ismay in advance. The two revealed to us what Season 4 is all about – and what you can expect.
The most important things about Season 4:
- Season 4 will fundamentally change the most important feature of Diablo 4: items and itemization, that is your loot.
- Additionally, there will be some revisions, such as to the Hell floods, which will become significantly more extensive.
- The new season starts on May 14, 2024. Here you can find all the info about Season 4 at a glance.
The developers explain: Despite the PTR, two things regarding Season 4 are still unclear: the season theme and the special season mechanic. Tim Ismay and Deric Nuñez explained both to me in detail – and more.
The theme of the season will be the Iron Wolves, which many have already suspected. The mercenary association has been a fixed part of the world since Diablo 2 and has played an increasingly important role since then. This was planned that way. Nuñez says about this:
With Season 4, we were able to continue this tradition by integrating them permanently into the Hell floods. Through the activities of the Iron Wolves, players can fight side by side with these notorious and honorable mercenaries. […] In addition, players will almost be inducted into the Iron Wolves.
Deric Nuñez in an interview
Because the Iron Wolves will come as a fixed part of all Hell floods. You will be able to fight alongside the mercenaries – whether in the seasonal or the eternal realm. The expansion affects the entire game and remains “forever.”
Previously, we already spoke with the heads about the future of Diablo 4:
“The focus of Season 4 is to enhance the experience of looting and leveling.”
Nuñez further explains that the changes to Hell floods in Season 4 will affect all realms: “As the Iron Wolves are now integrated into these floods, it is permanent. That’s simply how Diablo 4 now deals with Hell floods.”
Only two things are said to be exclusive to Season 4:
- the seasonal activity “Call of the Wolf”
- and the seasonal item “Profane Mindcage”
Both pay into the idea of the season to improve itemization. In the detailed response, it says:
With Season 4, there is a strong emphasis on the changes we’ve made everywhere, with itemization, tampering, mastering, and all those things. Everything leads back to the loot.
This is the focus of Season 4. Enhancing the experience of looting and leveling.
We have a consumable item as part of the seasonal mechanics or as a seasonal item: the “Profane Mindcage.” It drops from the new Hellbourne, a new monster type in the Hell floods.
When you kill a Hellbourne in the seasonal realm, it will drop a Mindcage. When you consume it, it increases – for 60 minutes, I believe – the level of the Hell flood monsters by up to ten as well as their drop rate of Anomalous Ember. […]
In Season 4, it’s about tinkering with your gear, expanding the class fantasy. The Mindcage takes it a bit further, encouraging people to test their builds, maximize their efficiency. […]
Deric Nuñez in an interview
Ismay adds that Season 4 is so much different from all previous seasons. The changes have been in the making for a very long time. While other seasons have a cool theme that then disappears again, Season 4 fundamentally reshapes everything – and the changes remain.
In the complete interview, we also talk about other topics, such as the most important lessons from past seasons and future possibilities. Additionally, I was able to get some exciting answers on topics that are being hotly discussed in the community. You can find the complete interview about Season 4 here on MeinMMO.
By the way, the Iron Wolves as a seasonal theme are quite prominent since they come from Kurast. Kurast will also be the most important point of the first expansion, Vessel of Hatred. Deric Nuñez only said to me:
“We are always looking for ways to meaningfully continue the story of Sanctuary. But how [Season 4] relates to the upcoming expansion or not, we cannot talk about yet.” More about the expansion can be read here: Vessel of Hatred is set to be a “step forward” – here’s how it will continue
