The test server in Diablo 4 is in full swing and you can test the new updates for Season 4 there for a few more days. However, you will not find a Season theme there. The developers recently explained why.
The PTR (Public Test Realm) went live in Diablo 4 on April 2 and since then, players have been testing the fresh content that is coming to the game in Season 4. Many features are being very well received, especially the “new” Hell Tide, which wants to hunt you down and take you out.
That there is no Season theme on the PTR and that none is known so far may surprise some players. The developers addressed the reason for this on X (formerly Twitter) on March 21, well before the launch of the PTR. Essentially, they want you to focus entirely on the updates.
In Season 3, leaderboards were introduced in Diablo 4 and will remain in place afterward. In the video, you can learn more about the leaderboards:
The changes should be the focus
On X, Game Director Joseph Piepiora thanks for the numerous feedback regarding the “Campfire Chat” livestream that took place on March 20. There, the developers reported which changes will be introduced in Season 4 in Diablo 4. In particular, the loot system will receive a massive overhaul.
In the comments under the post, users are asking when the new Season theme will be announced. Piepiora replies: “At some point after the PTR is shut down. There is nothing more to reveal at this moment.” In another comment, he also notes that the Season theme therefore cannot be tested on the PTR.
What is the reason for that? In response to the question of what the reason for the decision is, the Game Director writes in a comment:
We want to maintain the focus on the changes we announced during the livestream today and will greatly benefit from the attention on the PTR.

How does the community react? In the comments, users seem to be divided. For example, “Pheeve009” writes on X: “I’m not so sure. None of the Season themes have gone smoothly […] The theme is one of the most important features we interact with, it should be tested.”
And “MrCleman1” states on X: “To be honest, I think it was a smart decision not to test the Season theme [on the PTR]. Sure, it could benefit from it, but in this case, it really takes away the surprise/newness. Testing only the hard changes to the base game is probably the better approach.”

The developers have extended the current Season 3 of Diablo 4 due to the PTR, meaning that Season 4 will start later than originally planned. The content you are currently testing on the PTR can thus be “properly” played in May, instead of as originally scheduled for April.
