Blizzard is working on an unannounced Diablo project. But what should it become? The wishes of the fans vary widely.
At Blizzard’s game forge, they are working on a Diablo project that has not yet been announced. So far, we only know that Blizzard is looking for people to work on it. All good so far. But what do you wish for from the new title? We have looked around on social media and compiled the most popular wishes.
The ideas range from a card game to a mobile grinder.
Diablo 4 – This has to be different, right?
A fourth installment of the Diablo franchise has been the talk of the fans for a long time. “Taking hack and slash to the next level” is what some players demand. Others criticize: Is that even possible? How should a fourth installment differentiate from Diablo III? The gameplay is fluid; is a new installment just about new graphics?
Many players are running out of steam with Diablo 3. They only return for the start of a season every few months, play for a few days and then move on to another game. What a new installment of the Diablo series would need to do to engage players long-term is questionable. Blizzard would need to come up with extreme changes.
Diablo IV is also currently a hot topic among fans regarding the new unannounced installment of the franchise.
An RTS? This has to be special.
Is Blizzard venturing into new areas with a real-time strategy game for the Diablo franchise? Here, fans suspect a combination of different areas, namely Warcraft and Diablo.
The speculation about a new real-time strategy game has been around for a long time. The reason for this is internal reshuffles at Blizzard. In September 2017, we reported that WoW head Tom Chilton, Heroes of the Storm guru Dustin Bowder, and StarCraft II icon David Kim were working on new projects at Blizzard. Back then, there was talk of a Mobile MMO RTS.
It is clear that a new real-time strategy game would have to stand out significantly from the existing ones in order to achieve great success.
Diablo 2 Remaster? Probably not
Could the new project be a remastered version of Diablo 2?
Here, fans are divided:
- Some say: Sure, after the remastered version of Brood War and the announcement of WoW Classic, Diablo 2 would be a logical step for Blizzard.
- On the other hand, it is said that the unannounced Diablo project will not be a remastered version. Fans argue that the many job postings seen in the past point to a larger project. A remake of an already existing game could be handled by Blizzard with a smaller team, as people write on Reddit.
In the new Diablo project, a large part of the community does not believe in a remastered version of Diablo 2.
Card game – Soulstone
Is Blizzard attempting another card game or an expansion for Hearthstone in the Diablo style? This possibility is hotly debated on Reddit, and there is even a name already suggested in the community: Soulstone.
Such speculation has long persisted in the community. Already in early 2014, player Existor presented a concept for a dark card game in the Diablo style on the Diablo forums:
The new job posting, however, contradicts a card game, as Blizzard is looking for someone to design dungeons. Or could this also be a euphemism for card game boards?
Diablo 3 expansion
In addition to many new proposals for standalone games, some fans also believe in an expansion for Diablo 3.
Reddit user TheFunktupus writes, “As much as I want Diablo 4, Reaper of Souls was also an “unannounced Diablo project” before it was revealed.” He explains that he wishes for Diablo 4. Because “if Diablo 3 gets an expansion, it has to be huge to keep the game entertaining for several more years.”
