Traditionally, merchants in Diablo are rather ridiculed and are only there to buy your loot from dungeons. However, in Diablo 4, they can actually have some really good stuff. But you need luck and a keen eye.
What do merchants sell? At merchants, you can get various equipment for every slot: weapons, armor, and jewelry. Normally, merchants only sell items that are worse than what you find. But in Diablo 4, you might get lucky:
- more powerful, sacred items can be obtained starting from level 51
- the strongest, “inherited” ancestral items are sold by merchants starting from level 73
- there are differing statements about the required levels, we are still verifying
However, you must play at the corresponding world level where the items can also appear, which means world level 3 for sacred and world level 4 for inherited items. In the guide, we explain how to reach world levels 3 and 4. This also works with curiosities:
That’s why you should visit them every hour: Every hour on the hour, the inventory of the merchants refreshes. From then on, you have the chance for new items. By the way, all merchants in all towns share the same inventory, so you don’t have to travel to every location, just 3 merchants for:
- jewelry
- weapons
- armor
The best place for this is in Cerrigar in Scosglen, where all the merchants are close together. With a bit of luck, you might find items with a power level above 800 here, although the absolutely strongest items currently can only be obtained from rare opponents.

Legendaries from merchants, but only with a lot of luck
According to some reports from fellow players and on Reddit, it is even possible to find legendary items at merchants. These are not always necessarily the best, but you are mainly interested in the aspect attached to them. Unique items have not yet been found.
If you find a Legendary that has a power that benefits you and is well “rolled”, buy it. You can check how strong an effect is with 2 settings. You can then enhance a more powerful, rare item with it.
The stronger items at the merchants can become quite expensive and go into the millions. Gold is definitely less of a problem towards the end of the game, but it can become scarce again. Which stats and aspects are useful for your build, we explain in the tier list:
