In the upcoming Diablo 4, we already know two of our biggest adversaries: Lilith and Inarius. These two are the ones who created the world of Diablo. So why are we fighting against them? This question is also concerning fans.
Who is Lilith? The demoness Lilith is the daughter of Mephisto, the Lord of Hatred. Together with the angel Inarius, she is responsible for the creation of Sanctuary and its inhabitants, the Nephalem – who later became humans.
Lilith is quite literally the “mother” of all humans and thus of all the characters we have played since Diablo 1. She even saved us from being erased by Inarius when he recognized a danger in the Nephalem and wanted to eradicate them.
In the story of Diablo 4, Lilith and Inarius return as major adversaries. They are already present in the trailers and stories, and the whole plot revolves around the two.
The veneration of Lilith is even a gameplay element that makes your characters stronger. Nevertheless, she is the opponent we will probably all face sooner or later.
In our special, you can learn the full story of Lilith. You can see the epic encounter between the two lovers here:
“Humans are less than slaves to her”
Is Lilith really evil? The short answer is: Yes, Lilith is evil at heart. She never saved us out of love or maternal affection, but because she has her own plans for humanity.
Lilith wants to use the Nephalem and humans to pursue her own goals. Her trademarks are manipulation and seduction. Accordingly, she is an outstanding liar and excellent at misleading “simple” humans.
In the additional works and books related to Diablo, it becomes clear in some places that Lilith only needs humans as a means to an end. However, we do not know her goals exactly.
On reddit, fans are also discussing why Lilith is actually an opponent in the game. One user explains it quite aptly:
[Humans are] less slaves, more livestock. She raises livestock to sacrifice them for her goals. That means she does not think twice when she sacrifices humans in a ritual. To her, humans are less than slaves, which is already a pretty low bar.
That she does not shy away from sacrifices can already be seen in the first cinematic of Diablo 4, where Lilith is reborn through the blood sacrifices of multiple humans. According to the user, humanity only receives protection because a farmer would also protect his herd from a wolf attack – he wants to slaughter them himself in the end.
In our quiz, you can test your knowledge of Lilith and Inarius. The first cinematic of Diablo 4 shows the spectacular rebirth of the demoness:
Will we kill Lilith? We cannot say for certain yet. The Diablo games often have a pretty clear line with a direct fight of good against evil. But even in Diablo 3, there were two major story twists.
Whether we will actually fight and kill Lilith, or whether she will flee or we will even side with her later, we will likely only find out long after the release of Diablo 4.
The fact that both Lilith and Inarius could establish a cult among humans in Diablo 4 is due to the tragic events prior. At the end of Diablo, the main villain of the Reaper of Souls expansion almost achieved his will:
