During the beta of Diablo 4, players found a secret boss that appeared randomly in their dungeons – and gave them quite a challenge. This is the Butcher, one of the most dangerous bosses in the entire Diablo series.
What kind of boss is this? The Butcher, better known by his original name “The Butcher”, is a boss from Diablo 1. There he surprised many players with his iconic line: “Ah, Fresh Meat” as they entered his slaughterhouse.
Since his first appearance, the Butcher has been present in several Diablo installments. During the Diablo 4 beta, players have now discovered that the Butcher also appears in the latest installment of the series.
In Diablo 1, the Butcher had his own room adorned with dismembered corpses and splattered blood. In Diablo 4, he can appear randomly in dungeons – as an additional boss that heats things up for you.
What makes the Butcher so dangerous? The massive demon wields a huge cleaver and pulls players towards him with his meat hook to attack them. His charge attack, which can instantly kill careless heroes, is especially dangerous.
Since part 1, the Butcher has been considered one of the toughest bosses in the series, especially since he can hit players unexpectedly and is remarkably quick for his size. His attacks are fast and simultaneously powerful. Like all enemies in Diablo 4, he scales with the dungeon level.
Shortly before the beta, the developers showed one of the dungeons from Diablo 4 and sparked skepticism:

It does not happen often to encounter the Butcher, as he only appears randomly as a rare encounter. Many players were astonished and delighted to see an old and feared face again.
Others have raised concerns. In the Diablo 4 beta, the Butcher was likely the deadliest boss of all. He has already permanently killed at least one hardcore character there, as he can kill heroes at level 25 with just a few attacks.
Even the famous Twitch nerd Asmongold encountered the Butcher and was ruthlessly outmatched:
Players now fear that the Butcher may lead to frustration later in the game. If he appears randomly in the highest level dungeons and slaughters painstakingly leveled hardcore heroes, that just isn’t fun. Whether this will actually be the case will only be seen at release.
Why is the Butcher in Diablo 4? The Butcher is not a unique demon, but a type of demon. There are many Butcher-demons in the lore of Diablo, so it doesn’t always have to be the same Butcher you fight against.
The boss made appearances after Diablo 1 in Diablo 3 and even in Diablo Immortal as well as the MOBA Heroes of the Storm. If you want to meet the Butcher yourself, you can check out the open beta of Diablo 4 before release. It starts on March 24:
