Many players have set themselves the goal of reaching level 100 in hardcore mode in Diablo 4. Some have already achieved this, others have failed. And one player died just before reaching level 100.
Why is level 100 such a special achievement? Blizzard has announced that the first 1,000 players will be immortalized on a Lilith statue who reach the level in hardcore mode. The event ends in early September or when the 1,000 spots are filled.
How did the player die just before level 100? On Reddit, there is a post where u/Cerbinol writes: “A friend died in hardcore solo at 99… he was just 5 % away from level 100.” In the picture he attached, you can see the cause of death:
Killed by: Serpentcaller, one of the NPC cultists in the game.
The image also reveals that the player was at level 99 and had already invested over 150 hours of playtime. Thus, he not only lost his hunter in hardcore mode but also an enormous amount of time and effort.
He was left with only the progress in the campaign, allowing him to skip it with his next character.
Here you can see how you can also get your characters to level 100:
Players recognize the tremendous achievement
How does the community react? Under the post in the Diablo 4 subreddit, there are now over 1,000 comments. The comment with the most upvotes comes from cloudsmiths: “Still plenty of time to try again if he wants to make it onto the statue list.”
He also attaches a photo showing a statistic that was likely taken from a tweet. This shows the data one week after the release of Diablo 4. At that time, only 163 hardcore players had reached level 100.
“Experiencing the loss of a hardcore character is a great way to feel that you are still alive in real life,” writes Mikimao about the character death.
User SizzleFinances writes: “Playing in hardcore mode makes the game feel alive. Every decision counts! My pulse races during boss fights.”
LighthouseHLAKBR writes: “All that time and effort, wasted. Kudos to the hardcore players, but I could never do it.” The comment receives over 500 upvotes.
Several users respond that they find the attempt particularly hard in the first week after release because so much can go wrong.
A player lost his character in hardcore mode in an especially frustrating way.
